Idols and Fans Crossing the Line Leads to Tragedy, Stalking is Now a Crime

The relationship between idols and fans crosses the line.

In the third week of August, the revelation of WayV Lucas' private life and Apink Jung Eun-Ji's stalking has heated up the entertainment industry at the same time.

The relationship between idols and fans is changing. It is a bit controversial, for it has spread to a similar love relationship than a relationship that coexists with a good influence. It is a tragedy when idols and fans cross the line. The idol's lifeline comes to an end, and then excessive love will take its toll.

WaV Lucas' Dating Controversy

In the case of NCT member Lucas' personal life, Lucas is the cause of the incident himself. Lucas used his idol status to request a personal meeting with his fans, it caused a huge damage to those who admired him.

Because of the revelations of Lucas' ex-girlfriends, his career is now put on hold. Lucas always said that he likes good girls, but he really was referring to "good" fans who are gullible enough so he can control and brainwash them. An idol should have a sense of responsibility. However, he doesn't have it, and he is a person who does not deserve to be loved at all.

Lucas then apologized through a handwritten apology when suspicions were raised about his private life and his agency suspended all of his upcoming activities.

South Korean Government fights Idol Stalking Crime

The act of sabotaging and stalking celebrities has already been a problem that has been going on for decades.

The government has rolled up its arms in the battle of continued stalking crimes. The aim is to eradicate stalking by executing the "Stalking Punishment Act," which will punish offenders with imprisonment or fines.

Last March, the "Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes, etc." was passed by the National Assembly. After 22 years since the bill was introduced, the "Stalking Punishment Act" was passed. According to the law, "stalking" means "the act of approaching or observing the other party of his or her family, regardless of the will of the other party and without justifiable reason." It also refers to acts that may cause anxiety or fear in others by sending different objects, texts, or videos with information and communication networks like mail, phone, and message.

The punishment for stalking is up to three years in prison with a fine of up to 30 million won or $25650. The law will take its effect in October.

The relationship between idols and fans is "similar" lovers, and not real "lovers." The common age group of idol consumers is teenagers. It is the age that is greatly affected by every act of an idol. To the extent they are held up like idols by teenagers, idols must take moral and ethical responsibility for all their words and actions.

On the other hand, fans also need to reflect on whether what they do to idols or other celebrities is mainly "virtuous" to support them or if they could cause harm. Stalking, constant following, and harassing the other person, although they have expressed their intention to refuse, is an obvious crime.

Experts from the entertainment industry stated that the person who puts celebrities in pain is not the fan but it is the perpetrator of stalking. As the "Stalking Act" will be enforced in October, fans should be aware that excessive fandom could lead to legal punishment.
