SEVENTEEN and LOONA Win Hallyu Culture Daesangs – Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism Award & Seoul Mayor Award
In the awarding ceremony, SEVENTEEN was hailed as 2021's Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism awardee. This award is considered as daesang (the highest prize), which is given to the Hallyu star that contributed the most to the spread of K-pop and Korean culture around the world.
SEVENTEEN, who is known to be one of the leading groups of the Korean wave, sold more than 1 million albums with their latest release, "Your Choice," making them quadruple million-sellers.
Upon receiving the award, the K-pop leaders conveyed their grateful hearts, saying, "It is a great honor to receive such a meaningful award. As we received a valuable award, we will try to promote the Korean Wave more in the future."
They added, "We will try to be a SEVENTEEN that can have a good influence on many people. Lastly, we hope that the Hallyu Expo will thrive further."
Along with SEVENTEEN, LOONA also won the Hallyu Culture Daesang – Seoul Mayor Awards.
LOONA particularly rose globally with their third mini-album "Midnight (12:00)" released in October last year. The release ranked 112th on Billboard's main album chart "Billboard 200" — proof of how they break the U.S. market.
In the ceremony, LOONA said, "Thank you. We will try to promote K-pop widely."
Oh My Girl and Kingdom Also Gain Recognitions from the South Korean Government at 2021 Newsis K-pop Expo
Furthermore, the K-pop girl group Oh My Girl won the National Assembly's Culture, Sports, and Tourism Committee Award, along with actor Park Ki Woong.
OH MY GIRL, who swept domestic and foreign music charts with "NONSTOP," "Dolphin," and "Dun Dun Dance," said on their commemoration speech, "As you gave us a valuable award, we will work harder for the Korean Wave."
KINGDOM then received the Next Generation Hallyu Star Award, which has been consistently showing great results, particularly in the U.S.
In fact, the rookie group already conquered the U.S. Billboard's World Digital Song Sales Chart with their track, "Karma," five months after its debut.
In response, KINGDOM said, "It's meaningful because it's the first award we're receiving. We will try to become an artist who humbly promotes the Korean Wave in the future."
Meanwhile, AleXa and Gaho also won special awards from the awards ceremony.
The Newsis K-pop Expo, which started in 2019, was launched to give recognition to Hallyu Stars who contributed the most to the status of Korean culture and encourage the growth of related industries.
It was hosted with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the Korea Communications Commission, and the Seoul Tourism Foundation.
