GOT (Girls on Top) the Beat's 'M Countdown' Performance Draws Mixed Opinions for THIS Reason

On January 27, the SM Entertainment supergroup GOT the Beat brought their debut song "Step Back" to a music show stage for the first time after a month of debut. Their line-up, which contains the top visuals, vocalists, dancers, and rappers from the company, caused heightened expectations from viewers.

However, many were left disappointed by the performance put on by the girl group. People criticized the members for lip-syncing, with many angrier over the fact that they did not hide how they were not singing live. Some called the stage "fake" due to this reason.

Upon first listen, people would believe that GOT the Beat is singing live, as their breathing sounds can be heard in each verse. Taeyeon's high note is slightly different from the studio version, leading viewers to believe that they are performing live. However, it was soon discovered that the seven idols were lip-syncing to a Live AR (Live All Recorded).

Live AR is when the idol re-records the song to sound less clean than the original version. It includes all the breathing sounds and adjusts a few beats to make it seem like the idol is singing live. This makes the performance more realistic. It is often difficult for some viewers to distinguish between Live AR and live vocals due to how similar both sound.

However, people claimed the members made it extremely obvious they were not singing. For example, during Taeyeon's high note in the second pre-chorus, it was noted that Taeyeon did not open her mouth wide enough to sing the note, and she had stopped lip-syncing before her line ended.

People also pointed out that other members, such as aespa's Winter, were spotted not lip-syncing their lines.

How Did People React to GOT the Beat's Lip-Syncing?

This is the second stage for "Step Back," and many are upset that SM Entertainment's supergroup has not sung live. Others did not like the use of Live AR, with some stating it was used to fool the viewers deliberately. The members are known for being some of the best in the company, but they cannot prove their strength if they continue to lip-sync.

Some comments concerning GOT the Beat's performance read, "If you are good at singing, why do you lip-sync?" "Their lip-syncing is so obvious," "If you don't want to sing live, why debut as an idol? Singing is your job," "Better to just use the studio version that Live AR. It's like your fooling the audience," and "If you have the skills, pick up the mic and sing. They are always lip-syncing and cheating the viewers."
