When the line-up was first announced, two Korean groups were announced in the line-up — BIGBANG and Epik High. However, BIGBANG ultimately withdrew from the music festival, and Epik High was the only K-pop group officially announced to join this year's event.

Soon after the announcement was made, the members of aespa started to hint at a secret project in the United States. On Instagram, Ningning asked the fans to guess where they were going. With the hints aespa has given, many believe the SM Entertainment girl group will follow in BLACKPINK's footsteps and become the second girl group to be invited to attend this prestigious music festival. If true, they will be the third K-pop girl group to perform at Coachella, with 2NE1 being the second following an unexpected reunion this week.

aespa Receives Mixed Reactions Following Rumors of Coachella Appearance

While MYs are excited over the possibility of aespa performing at Coachella, the general public seems divided. People believe that aespa does not match Coachella's overwhelmingly festive atmosphere. It was also noted that, compared to BLACKPINK, aespa has a much smaller fanbase, which could lead to a small audience.

Additionally, according to internet users, stage performance is one of aespa's biggest weaknesses. Many believe the group does not have the charisma to attract non-fans, so appearing at Coachella is "pointless."

People also believe BLACKPINK has raised the standards, and aespa may not match BLACKPINK's 2019 performance. In addition, people think SM Entertainment is trying hard to make the group the second BLACKPINK, which spurs criticism against aespa from the public.
