Seungri to Transfer to Civilian Prison Following Military Discharge

Back on May 26, former BIGBANG member Seungri was ruled guilty on all nine charges brought up against him, including embezzlement, special violence instigation, prostitution mediation, purchasing of prostitution services, habitual gambling, violation of the Act on Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Economic Crimes, violation of the Foreign Exchange Transactions Act, violation of the Food Sanitation Act, and violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.

After he was found guilty, the court sentenced Seungri to one year and six months in prison, which is a reduced sentence from his first sentence of three years in prison after he filed and the military prosecution had filed appeals. The former idol was also given a fine of 1,156,900,000 won (around $994,544 USD).

On June 8, it was reported by the military authorities that Seungri, who is currently being held in a military prison, is set to be discharged today (June 9) and will be transferred to a new prison.

Seungri is reportedly being transferred to Yeoju Prison, which is a civilian prison located closely to the military prison in Icheon City in the Gyeonggi Province.

Seungri to Be Released From Prison in February 2023

In addition, Seungri was initially scheduled to be discharged from his mandatory military service in September of last year after receiving a sentence in his first trial. However, his military discharge was placed on hold under the Military Service Act, and he was subequently put on trial in a higher court as a soldier.

As such, Seungri will only be serving at the civilian prison for eight more months, until his scheduled release in February 2023.

After finding out that the former BIGBANG member only has eight months left in his prison sentence, numerous netizens expressed their anger towards the sentencing and the justice system in South Korea.

Meanwhile, after Seungri became involved in the Burning Sun scandal, he withdrew from BIGBANG in March 2019 and subsequently retired from the entertainment industry.
