PSY's 'Summer Swag 2022' Raises Concerns Over Use of Water Amid Drought and COVID-19

PSY is known to be one of the most in-demand artists when it comes to music festivals or concerts, hence, many are always excited to attend any of his shows.

Recently on June 3, PSY announced his plans to resume his concert brand "PSY Soak Show" for the first time in three years, with "Summer Swag" this summer.

However, following the announcement of this year's Summer Swag, concerns were raised regarding the singer's excessive use of water during these types of shows. He utilizes around 300 tons of drinkable water per show which is considered wasteful because South Korea is currently facing a drought in several regions of the country.

Despite the concerns raised by fans who asked PSY to reduce the use of water for his upcoming Summer Swag shows, ticket sales for several cities continued without any statement from PSY over the concerns.

More recently on June 17, additional concerns regarding the use of water for such events were raised by South Korea's Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDC).

According to CDC in a statement made, they warned artists and organizers from such events that makes use of water. CDC said, "People become more vulnerable to viral infections then their masks become wet. We advice outdoor events to refrain from spraying water onto crowds when possible."

PSY Faces Backlash for Response to CDC's Warnings Over 'Summer Swag 2022' Concerns

Following CDC's issued warning, PSY's measure of response was announced through Interpark Ticket. They said that waterproof masks will be given to each spectator attending PSY's Summer Swag shows.

However, PSY is met with another wave of criticism over his responsive measure to CDC's warnings over the use of water for his shows, with many arguing that the issue can easily be resolved by excluding the use of water for Summer Swag.

Some comments from netizens read:

"Just reduce the water. Why is he trying to pick a fight with the government?"

"This is just outright selfish. He won't reduce water use for his shows because this is his 'brand' when it could harm a lot of people."

"All that they are asking is that you do not spray water on people. Is that so hard?"

"Yes, a reminder that COVID is not 'over.'"

"So these shows will be wasting water that could be used to help the agriculture industry, and that they might expose crowds to infectious viruses. What is the point of being so stubborn and going forward with it?"
