HYBE Criticized for 'Excessive Exposure' to NewJeans' Minor Members

New idol group NewJeans was embroiled in controversy over its sensationalism at the time of their debut.

In particular, HYBE's sub-label ADOR heralds the launch of its first girl group NewJeans on August 1. Ahead of their official debut, the group raised anticipation as they dropped the MV for their title track, "Attention," on July 22. Immediately, the music video caught the attention of K-pop fans with its refreshing colors and popping scenes.

However, a controversial scene was captured in the three-minute music video. It is a scene where members Hanni and Hyein dance at the stadium.

The two showed intense choreography while wearing a tube top. As a result, their body was excessively revealed, with the collarbone and waistline showing blatantly.

Considering that the two members are minors, fans and netizens pointed out that the clothes they wore were unsuitable for their age, making it more controversial. In particular, Hyein, the youngest member born in 2008, is only 14 years old and is still a middle school student.

Fans complained that HYBE approved the minor members to show excessive exposure. Netizens showed signs of discomfort, such as:

• "I can only sigh when I see the music video costumes."
•  "How uncomfortable would it be for those who wear them?"
•  "There are many pretty clothes, but do you think you will succeed if you wear revealing clothes?"

LE SSERAFIM's Chaewon 'Underboob' Controversy Resurfaces Amid Criticism of HYBE

While HYBE gained negative feedback about how they dress NewJeans, fans and internet users implied that this is not the first time the company was criticized for a similar reason.

When LE SSERAFIM debuted in May, they were also embroiled in controversy over its sensationalism with costumes and music video production.

HYBE was especially criticized for "only inducing sexual stimulation" by releasing teaser videos and photos wearing tennis looks and high heels. Furthermore, Kim Chaewon, a member born in 2000, was criticized for wearing an underboob outfit, an unconventional fashion that exposes the lower part of the chest.

As a result, discontent exploded with HYBE, which did not accept fans' opinions even though it was criticized a lot when LE SSERAFIM made their debut before NewJeans.

Internet users are saying:

• "It seems like we are talking to the wall."
• "I don't know why they wear this kind of clothes."
• "If you want to wear it like that, wear it yourself."
• "If your outfit is fine, you will succeed half."

The media outlet MoneyS also stated:

"HYBE insists on wearing provocative and uncomfortable outfits only for girl groups. Don't you know that you can succeed with an outfit that fits your age and is comfortable to dance with?"
