On August 1, the third title track, "Cookie," of NewJeans' self-titled debut album, was finally unveiled on various music streaming platforms along with its other three songs.

On the same day, the song's MV was also uploaded, gaining attention for its neat and sophisticated overall by using outdoor stairs and benches as props against a simple background. It brought out the beauty of the margins, and the harmony of black and white is modern.

Furthermore, its exquisite choreography and cute lyrics also gained interest from listeners and viewers.

However, international internet users and fans raised their concerns when they noticed that the song lyrics are allegedly inappropriate for NewJeans, whose members are 04 to 08-liners. On Twitter, a user's post gained massive attention when they highlighted that the lyrics contained sexual innuendos, "cookie" referring to the female genitals.

"Looking at my cookie, the scent alone will make you see// You can’t stop at one bite with me.

If you want it, you can get it// If you want it, let me hear you say you want it more."

As soon as the post went viral, many international fans and netizens agreed with the author. Many conveyed their discomfort with the lyrics. They also criticized HYBE and Min Hee Jin, who were previously accused of glamorizing pedophilia and allowing excessive exposure to minors.

They explained that they are not criticizing NewJeans; rather, they want to protect them and make ADOR a sub-label under HYBE to find unique concepts and songs suitable to fans' tastes and members' ages.

On the flip side, fans and supporters of NewJeans defended the rookies, HYBE and Min Hee Jin. According to them, the song's lyrics are not sexual and criticized the netizens who think that way. Some fans also pointed out that the original writer based their comments on the lyrics' English translations and interpreted them maliciously.

Koreans also refuted that there is sexual innuendo in the song and described it as a cute, fun, refreshing track.

On top of this, NewJeans also explained in their past interview that "Cookie" is actually a fan song.

"'Cookie' is a song that we prepared to express our gratitude to the fans who waited for the team's debut and cheered for us, and we prepared this album thinking that we would like the first album to be a sweet cookie-like gift for our fans."
