So what could have caused the rumor to start? Well, first of all, Minhyuk and Hyelin are both from the same neighborhood in Gwangju, and have known each other since they started training within the same goal to debut as a K-pop idol.

It seemed that when Minhyuk was still a trainee under Starship Entertainment (his current agency), he continued to communicate with Hyelin. The two of them were supposedly seen interacting on Hyelin's Instagram account.

Minhyuk initially had an Instagram account ID "hyuk_mh," and he was spotted commenting under Hyelin's Instagram post, saying she is pretty. To that comment, Hyelin asked why he was not sleeping yet but the male idol didn't respond.

Four weeks later, MONSTA X Minhyuk was again seen commenting under the same post, asking EXID Hyelin to contact him through Kakao Talk. On a different occasion, when Minhyuk said that he was feeling frustrated, Hyelin told him to contact her through Kakao Talk.

Because of their interaction on Instagram and the fact that they are close with each other, fans have been closely watching over the two. Some fans soon concluded that MONSTA X Minhyuk and EXID Hyelin were dating.

MONSTA X Minhyuk Dating Rumor: Did He Really Date EXID Hyelin?

On April 10, 2018, Hyelin personally denied her dating rumors with Minhyuk. She and her fellow EXID members (along with MONSTA X) had a pre-recording on SBS MTV's music show "The Show" on that day. After recording, she grabbed the mic and said, "There are MONSTA X fans here today, right? I didn't say anything before in case people would misunderstand, but we really are not dating."

Her sudden statement earned her various reactions from MONSTA X and EXID fans. Some MONBEBEs criticized her for making a big deal of the false rumors, while other fans came to her defense saying that she did nothing wrong and pointed out that all the hate comments she's been getting because of the rumors had led her to speak up about it.

On the same day that EXID Hyelin addressed her dating rumors with MONSTA X Minhyuk, the two idols' management agencies also released an official statement.

EXID's then-company Banana Culture stated, "Hyelin and Minhyuk have been close friends since they were young. As a result, there were rumors among fans that the two are dating." They added that Hyelin only made the comment on "The Show" to clarify misunderstandings.

MONSTA X's label Starship Entertainment also commented, "Minhyuk and Hyelin are not dating. They went to the same academy during their trainee days, but they are not anything more or less than that. We found out about the rumors for the first time through articles."

In addition to that, one staff member working on "The Show" clarified that EXID Hyelin only brought up the subject because she was answering a fan's question regarding the matter.

"Hyerin was pre-recording for SBS MTV's 'The Show.' When she was coming off stage, fans asked her about the dating rumors, so she answered them saying that they weren't dating," the staff member said.
