Sapphire Blue Ocean Floods Axiata Arena With The Return Of Super Junior’s Super Show 9: ROAD!
Malaysian ELFs were beyond ecstatic when Kuala Lumpur was added to the tour list for Super Show 9: ROAD as it has been over a decade since the last Super Show was held in Malaysia. Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil was bathed in a sapphire blue glow earlier this month as more than 10,000 fans filled up the venue to cheer on their favorite idol. The eight members of Super Junior: Lee Teuk, Yesung, Shindong, Eunhyuk, Donghae, Siwon, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun greeted fans with a large grin on their faces showing their happiness to be reunited with Malaysia ELFs. Member Heechul, however, was not able to take part in the current tour due to his long-standing leg injury.
The concert, organized by Star Planet and supported by Tourism Malaysia lasted nearly three hours where fans were able to see the boys' up close as they performed on extended stages nearer to the seated sections. The night became even more magical as the official lightsticks changed colors according to the sequence of the concert turning the arena into a festival of lights.
Super Junior opened the stage with a strong, majestic aura while dressed in royal outfits and performed hits like Burn The Floor, The Crown, Super and Mr. Simple, one after another. Even for us, it was difficult to catch our breath. Following a quick outfit change, the boys returned to the stage in glittering black costumes and treated fans to songs with sexier vibes such as Ticky Tocky, Paradox and Mystery with an addition of 2YA2YAO! especially for the Malaysian fans.
Being the seasoned performers that they are, Super Junior also greeted fans with a variety of antics during their introductory ment. Shindong expressed he was worried that not many people would show up (to the concert) as it was raining earlier in the day but ELFs proved that he had nothing to worry about as seats were filled to the top. At one point of the ment, Siwon greeted fans with not-so-typical Malay phrases like "Saya hanya setia kepada kamu" which translates to "I am loyal only to you". He also pretended to look at a cue sheet before showering fans with different versions of cute hearts such as the finger heart and cheek heart. The members of Super Junior-M also thrilled fans by interchanging their ments from Malay, English and even Mandarin which bumped up the concert's entertainment factor. It was indeed, a berry, berry, strawberry, blueberry fantastic night for ELFs.
After the ment section, the first Super Junior sub-unit, Super Junior-K.R.Y. blessed everyone's ears with a beautiful rendition of I Can't. The high-tempo was then slowed down through a series of ballads such as Believe and My Wish, which were dedicated to their precious fans. Despite having to wait almost three years, fans were truly touched to see the boys taking every chance they could to be closer to them during the song Callin'. Super Junior waved and said hello to fans in every corner of the arena.
Comedy has somewhat become a staple of Super Junior's concerts and Super Show 9 was not left out. During one of the VCR breaks, fans were treated to a hilarious segment of musical geniuses where the boys dressed up in wigs and classical costumes of nobility. The amazing performance of theatrical, opera versions of SPY, Rokkugo and Mamacita proved just how experienced Super Junior was in delivering uniquely dramatic stages. Changing into denim outfits, ELFs then had the pleasure of viewing a special stage performance of LATTE by Lee Teuk, Shindong and Siwon. The subsequent stages got even hotter through Super Junior's antics as they performed continuous bops from House Party, Devil, Wonder Boy to Let's Dance. One part in particular caught our eye as the boys were giving shoulder massages to each other, Yesung had disappeared from the stage due to problems with his in-ear devices. This did not stop the show as they soldiered on with their performances with Yesung quickly reappearing mid-way through Let's Dance.
Super Junior then kicked off the next set of songs with a more rock vibe and was aptly started by D&E's Bad and Danger and was followed by Black Suit, Bonamana and Super Junior's all-time famous. Sorry, Sorry. The stages were so powerful as the boys led fans through jumps, cheers and shouts. Leader Lee Teuk was especially hyped during the rock rendition of Bonamana whilst Ryeowook's high-notes echoed throughout the arena.
While goodbyes are inevitable, Super Junior did not let this sad notion ruin the fans' high energy as they returned to the stage for an encore. All throughout the concert, ELFs' energy was definitely unwavering. Their fanchants could be heard for almost every song and their lightsticks waved enthusiastically with every beat. It reminded us of what concerts used to be like and how everyone has missed such an amazing concert atmosphere.
Following performances of More Days With You and Walkin', the boys paused to deliver their final ment. They apologized for not being able to extend their concert as they had a flight to catch the same night. They also thanked the fans for the amazing energy to which member Eunhyuk mentioned that they should have two days for the next tour. Fans also surprised member Donghae by singing Happy Birthday as an early celebration for his birthday on October 15. He reciprocated by sending multiple flying kisses to the audience. During the last stage of the night, Happiness, all of the Super Junior members greeted fans in every section by walking in a long trail, waving to everyone.
The boys once again thanked the fans for continuing to support them before giving a final bow and left the stage shortly after. Members Siwon and Donghae lingered on the stage taking videos of the fans, probably a token for a truly amazing show.
