NewJeans' 'Hype Boy' Becomes Fastest K-pop Debut Song by Idol Group to Hit 100 Million Streams on Spotify

On July 22, ADOR, HYBE's latest sub-label led by Chief Brand Officer (CBO) Min Hee Jin, surprisingly launched its first K-pop girl group, NewJeans. A music video for the girls' debut song "Attention" was dropped at midnight KST on that day.

At midnight KST on July 23, the rookie girl group followed up with introduction videos for each member and a music video for their second debut song "Hype Boy."

NewJeans' "Hype Boy" has since been ranking high on Korean music charts, including MelOn, which is the biggest streaming platform in South Korea. The song also landed on multiple Billboard charts following its release, which is rare for a K-pop group that just debuted.

Notably, it achieved the second-highest peak on Billboard Global 200 Excl. U.S. chart among K-pop group debut songs (No. 36), bested only by the group's own song "Attention" that rose to No. 34.

In addition to domestic charts and Billboard charts, the debut song is also achieving great feats on Spotify. In fact, it recently broke a historic record.

On Nov. 6, NewJeans' "Hype Boy" surpassed 100 million streams on Spotify, becoming the rookie group's first song to do so. What's more impressive is the number of days it took to reach the mark.

"Hype Boy" was digitally released on Aug. 1 as part of the group's debut EP "New Jeans," meaning it took the track 98 days to attain the milestone. With that, it has become the fastest K-pop debut song by an idol group to garner 100 million streams on Spotify, surpassing the previous record of 131 days set by IVE's "ELEVEN."

Moreover, it has now tied with IVE's "LOVE DIVE" as the fastest K-pop song by a fourth-generation idol group to accumulate the said number of streams.

Meanwhile, "Hype Boy" has also recently become the longest-charting K-pop debut song by an idol group on the Spotify Global Chart in history, as it has now spent 80 days on the tally. It ranked No. 192 on the chart dated Nov. 6 with 909,492 streams.

Including K-pop solo debut track, "Hype Boy" is the second longest-charting project, bested only by BLACKPINK Lisa's "MONEY," which spent 236 days on the chart. Additionally, it is the first fourth-gen K-pop song to last that long on the list

NewJeans Reveals Official Fandom Name & Lightstick

In other news, NewJeans celebrated the 100th day since their debut on Oct. 29 by announcing both the name and light stick of their official fan club.

Fans of NewJeans are now collectively called "Bunnies" or "Tokkis" (the Korean word for "bunnies"). Meanwhile, their light stick has a bunny shape with a minimalistic and customizable design. The product is available for purchase in the first quarter of 2023.
