BLACKPINK Makes History as They Are Named TIME's 'Entertainer of the Year' (2022)

BLACKPINK has been chosen as TIME's "Entertainer of the Year" for 2022, achieving a historic milestone!

BLACKPINK Is TIME's 'Entertainer of the Year' for 2022 - Here's Why

On Dec. 5 local time, TIME announced the news in a feature article containing the accomplishments of Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé throughout the year. BLACKPINK is now the first girl group in the world to be named as TIME's "Entertainer of the year," as well as the second K-pop group overall following BTS in 2020.

While Jennie told the magazine that they are "very normal girls, at the end of the day," TIME believes their 2022 is absolutely not like that.

Last August, the quartet performed their hit single "Pink Venom" at the MTV VMAs. They then kicked off their "blockbuster world tour" in October and will reach 27 different cities over nine months.

TIME took note of how the tickets for the group's concerts in the past few months were sold out in minutes and were attended by tens of thousands of fans, including celebrities like Selena Gomez and Usher.

Another reason that made BLACKPINK TIME's "Entertainer of the Year" 2022 is that the second studio album of the foursome, "BORN PINK," released in September, notched a record as the best-selling album by Korean girl group in history, with more than two million copies sold to date.

Other than that, the quartet continues to dominate on YouTube, where they have become the musical act with the biggest number of subscribers, having 83 million so far.

But not only have BLACKPINK accomplished so much as a group this year, but all four members individually have as well.

TIME wrote, "You don't accomplish all that by being like other pop groups. Most have a limited life span: they age out, flame out, or see one member rise above. But BLACKPINK has managed to become the biggest girl group in the world precisely by allowing its members to be solo stars in their own right."

The magazine added that even though the group may be "bigger than the sum of its parts," each of its portions is "bigger than most other pop groups' combined efforts."

Previously, BLACKPINK was selected as one of TIME's "100 Next List 2019." The foursome was included as a "phenom" and secured a spot for their global influence and fan power.

Congratulations to BLACKPINK for being chosen as TIME's "Entertainer of the Year" for 2022!
