T.O.P will be the first Korean idol to travel to space. In an interview, he said, "I feel a great (sense of) pride and responsibility in becoming the first Korean civilian going to the moon and representing my country."

The rapper also revealed why he applied to be part of the lunar orbital mission, saying, "I applied to do dearMoon (project) because I want to feel new stimulation and enlightenment."

Actually, BIGBANG T.O.P is just one of the more than one million people who sent applications to join the dearMoon Project 2023. According to Tesmanian, individuals from 249 countries and regions all over the world applied for the said mission.

While it may seem impossible for the BIGBANG member to be selected considering the huge number of applicants, he was actually "destined" to be a crew member.

On Dec. 12, BIGBANG T.O.P updated his Instagram account with a new set of photos. The first two pictures feature a painting with the words "Dear Moon."

Many would probably think that the painting was done recently to commemorate his success to be part of the dearMoon Project 2023, but actually, the artwork was created four years ago- suggesting that T.O.P was really meant to travel to space in a mission called "DearMoon."

In the caption, T.O.P wrote, "Personally, 4 years ago, when I had the hardest time, my dear friend Joel painted this for me. This was not an accidental miracle. This was a fateful encounter created by greatness in ART."

Meanwhile, aside from the "FANTASTIC BABY" singer, the seven other spaceship crew members selected for the dearMoon Project 2023 are DJ and producer Steve Aoki, photographer and filmmaker Karim Iliya, actor Dev Joshi, musician and YouTuber Tim Dodd, Brendan Hall, choreographer Yemi A.D., and photographer Rhiannon Adam.

Moreover, there will be two reserve crew members namely dancer Miyu and snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington.

How Did Yusaku Maezawa Pick the 8 Crew Members?

Reportedly, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa said that he would pick individuals whom he considered artists, mentioning two qualifications that each crew member needed to possess to be chosen: "They need to be able to grow through this space travel and possess the potential to help humanity and society, and they must be able to support their fellow crew members."

The dearMoon Project is currently set to launch in 2023. But according to Space.com, the launch date may be pushed back substantially because Starship has not yet been approved for a flight to the moon and for an orbital journey around Earth.
