6 K-pop Female Idols Who Drew Flak for Controversial Clothing: TWICE Chaeyoung, BLACKPINK Jennie, More

Fashion can be tricky sometimes, especially in K-pop. While idols can amaze fans with their styling, there are also times when the clothing choice can create negative reactions from the public. In worst case scenarios, controversies can arise due to the outfit's design, context, or nature.

Here are 6 K-pop female idols who went under fire for controversial clothing.

1.    TWICE Chaeyoung

Chaeyoung of TWICE has been caught in multiple controversies for her clothing. She is one of the idols in K-pop, whose issues are still fresh on the spot.

On March 21, TWICE Chaeyoung apologized on her Instagram account for wearing a top, which contained a picture of Sex Pistols' Sid Vicious wearing a T-shirt with a swastika design. Chaeyoung immediately faced backlash for this clothing because of how the swastika symbol represented the German Nazi party, and as the Nazi flag's center.

In a separate occasion prior to this incident, Chaeyoung was seen wearing a QAnon shirt during their "SET ME FREE" comeback stages. The shirt design comprised of a political and conspiracy theory movement during 2017. This led fans to express their dismay on Chaeyoung's stylist.

2.    BLACKPINK Jennie

On the year 2020, Jennie of BLACKPINK received criticism during one of her scenes in the "Lovesick Girls" music video.

On the scene, the MV showcased her wearing a nurse outfit. On October 5, 2020, the Korean Health and Medical Worker's Union stated Jennie's outfit was providing warped stereotypes about nurses, pertaining to sexual and objectifying contexts.

One major aspect that added fuel to the fire is that during 2020, nurses were on the frontlines fighting against the COVID-19 pandemic. Afterwards, YG deliberated if the scene was to be edited out of the MV, and eventually, the agency finalized the scene's removal.

3.    Oh My Girl YooA

Oh My Girl YooA caught attention for her teasers in solo debut "Bon Voyage," which was released in August 2020. On her teasers, the idol was accused of cultural appropriation for sporting a Native American getup.

However, YooA mentioned that she was going for a look reminiscent from the Japanese animated film "Princess Mononoke" and the Korean Gumiho.

4.    Purple Kiss Goeun

Goeun of Purple Kiss was criticized for her solo concept photos in their "2022 Season Greetings," because of a Nazi eagle patch embellished on the outfit.

On November 23, 2021, the group's label RBW Entertainment issued an apology for the mishap. Apart from their statement, they also promised not to repeat the same mistake again, and implement closer inspection to their artists' clothing.

5.    MAMAMOO Hwasa

On July 7, 2019, MAMAMOO arrived at the Incheon International Airport after their venture to Hong Kong for SBS Super Concert. During their arrival at the airport, maknae Hwasa was seen wearing a plain white T-shirt without a bra.

Upon seeing this, many netizens supported Hwasa for being confident and not paying to what anyone thinks. However, some internet users found Hwasa's getup uncomfortable, leading them to criticize the "Maria" singer.

On November 14, 2019, Hwasa effortlessly shut down haters, who took her no-bra fashion negatively. Despite the criticism, Hwasa still remained an unbothered queen!

6.    Former Girl's Day Hyeri

On May 2, 2012, former Girl's Day Hyeri became hot topic for wearing a shirt with the "Rising Sun" flag design. Furthermore, the shirt was reportedly from a Japanese fan, who expressed gratitude to Hyeri after her free performance in Sendai, Japan.

The "Rising Sun" Imperial Japanese war flag design became controversial due to it reminding a painful history in war times. Afterwards, Hyeri and her agency Dream Tea Entertainment apologized for the mistake.
