K-Media Reveals Why BLACKPINK Has Slower Comebacks Compared To Other Groups

While some groups have 3 to 4 comebacks annually, BLINKs, BLACKPINK's fandom is lucky to have it at least once a year. But what's the real reason the quartet can't do the same despite being the biggest girl group in the world?

YG Entertainment Is Behind BLACKPINK's "Slower" Comebacks & "Fewer" Releases

Earlier, the Korean media outlet Korea JoongAng Daily released an article asking whether BLACKPINK is being "too slow" or is it K-pop just being "too fast."

In particular, the write-up emphasized the relatively "slower" comebacks and releases of the quartet compared to its rival girl groups; TWICE and (G)-IDLE. In fact, BLINKs, the fandom of the quarter has been repeatedly complaining about the agency mistreating BLACKPINK in the past, due to the wide time gap between their music releases.

As a result, the media outlet consulted insiders and found out that the person behind this is reportedly Yang Hyun Suk, the founder and current producer of YG Entertainment.

As per the officials, Yang is "obsessed" with perfection. From the song itself to its lyrics, even its former artists' iKON could attest that having him approve of their songs is not easy since he's "meticulous." This goes as well with BLACKPINK.

In fact, YG's comebacks are slow ever since, but releasing new music became even more difficult after numerous controversies hit the company starting in 2019.

Thus, pop culture critic Kim Youn Ha said:

"It is natural that consumers want to see more content about a group they like. However, from the case of BLACKPINK, we cannot conclude that returning quickly is good and releasing new products slowly is bad.”

BLACKPINK Is Already 'Global Pop Star' Not Local K-pop Group

In addition to this, music critics added that BLACKPINK has "fewer" comebacks since the quartet doesn't rely solely upon music to earn income.

Currently, the quartet were busy as global ambassadors to top luxury brands; Jisoo (Cartier, Dior), Jennie (Chanel), Lisa (Celine), and Rosé (Yves Saint Laurent).

Music critic Kim Do Heon continued that BLACKPINK might be taking it longer to return to the music scene as a K-pop artist, but as a "global pop star," this time isn't that long.

He explained that since BLACKPINK rose as artists at the international level such as Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus, it is understandable.

“In the past, BLACKPINK often released singles and at a faster pace. Now they have switched to releasing full albums. Therefore, they take more time to prepare. Simply put, BlackPink has now become a global pop star, not just a local Kpop group. That’s a miracle."

In fact, recently, BLACKPINK broke the record of music icon Spice Girls and became the girl group with the highest world tour sales.

BLACKPINK started its world tour, "BORN PINK" in Seoul last October and completed a total of 26 performances in 18 cities by December last year. BLACKPINK mobilized a total of 366,248 spectators in 26 performances held for about 3 months and made sales of 78,480,521 dollars.

This broke the initial highest-grossing girl group on tour record created by the Spice Girls from England. They recorded a performance profit of 78.2 million dollars in 11 performances in 2019.
