EDAM Entertainment Releases Update Regarding IU's Legal Battle

IU's legal showdown continues.

On August 7, EDAM Entertainment has updated fans on their legal process against false rumors and plagiarism accusations made against IU.

There were several key points on their statement, which started on elaborating the spy rumors surrounding IU. Read their first two highlights below:

"This is EDAM Entertainment.

We would like to inform you of the progress of the criminal complaints filed in 2023 (Q1, Q2, early Q3) against the people who spread malicious rumors and slander against EDAM Entertainment's artist, IU (real name is Lee Ji Eun, referred here as the 'Artist').

On the 2nd of this month, we discovered a resurfaced 'spy leaflet' in an online community and recognized the accused's lack of regret of one's wrongdoing, as well as the issue's gravity. Accordingly, we are here to update you on the case's progress and the status of the criminal complaint.

Please understand that specific numbers and aliases are not disclosed to protect the investigation's confidentiality.

1.    Case on the Leaflet Accusing the Artist being a Spy

On May 4, we filed a defamation through a statement of false facts complaint with the Songpa Police Station in Seoul against the person who spread misleading information online and offline, who claims the Artist is a spy.

This was followed on May 18, where several important leads were provided to the accused, through the complaint's supplementary statement investigations. This enabled the police authorities to identify the accused.

However, our understanding is that the head investigator is experiencing difficulties since the accused has refused to proceed with the investigation until today, approximately three months after the complaint filling and case submission.

In response, a prompt investigation will be sought out by submitting briefs in addition to provide more information of a crime.

Furthermore, we confirmed that neither the police nor others may arbitrarily remove the leaflets attach to a certain building in Ulsan, which has also been produced by the same distributor on the 2nd, that have been posted in an online community. We are devising legal measures to fundamentally block such an act."

2.    Complaint Filed Against the Artist

"According to media sources on May 10, a complaint was filed with the Gangnam Police Station in Seoul, alleging that the Artis had infringed the copyright of six musical works, and violated the Copyright Act.

We requested information of disclosure of the complaint on the same day. We were able to acquire a copy of the complain on May 12, and identified the relief sought, as well as the complaint's content.

On May 15, our legal counsel's brief was submitted, arguing that the matter lacked legal foundation and requested its termination as quickly as possible.

On July 20 and 28, more briefs were provided to clarify that legal foundation was lacking in the accusation made in this case. We are waiting for the disposition of the investigative authority."
