On August 15, foreign and domestic media ranked the most successful K-pop singers in the Japanese market based on Oricon CD & DVD sales from 2018 to 2022.

TWICE then followed in second place with 19.034 billion yen (130,707,429 USD) in sales. The nonet overcame male idol's power in the Japanese market by becoming the only girl group in the top 5.

SEVENTEEN ranked third place, posting sales of 15.13 billion yen (about 103,923,037 USD) from 2018 to 2022.

TVXQ then followed in fourth place with sales of 5.477 billion yen (38.2 million USD), while ENHYPEN ranked fifth with 4.069 billion yen (28.3 million USD).

K-pop fans instantly took to SNS to express their thoughts on the rankings.

  • "BTS popularity is world-class."
  • "It's not surprising."
  • "Even if the second and third places are combined, they can't beat BTS."

On the other hand, BTS member V is also boasting his personal popularity in Japan, with his pre-released song, "Love Me Again," from his debut solo album, "Layover."

It is scheduled to be released on September 8. However, it is already gaining high expectations from global music fans.

Upon its release, the song topped the Oricon Chart (as of August 11th).

TVXQ Lauded for Being the Only 2nd-Gen Group to Enter Top 5 Most Successful K-pop Singers in Japan

The legendary TVXQ boasted their status as the "Emperor of K-pop" as the only group from the second-gen era to enter the Top 5.

K-pop fans were impressed as the rankings were calculated from 2018 to 2022 only, excluding the years that the quintet (hereinafter duo) was active the most.

  • "I think it would have been much better if TVXQ had been active for a little longer."
  • "When TVXQ was there, it wasn't a time when one person lived to 100 cards each."
  • "TVXQ could have ranked higher if mass-purchasing albums are hot items back then."

Looking back, TVXQ, which debuted in 2006 in Japan, has successfully established itself in the foreign market with a thorough localization strategy since debut.

The group is still considered a legend in Japan as the only non-Japanese singer to hold a concert at Nissan Stadium, which can accommodate 72,327 spectators.

In June, the duo's Tokyo Dome performance was successfully completed about three and a half years after their last performance in November 2019.

With a total of 30 Tokyo Dome performances, 89 nationwide dome performances, and 119 total, it still boasted its popularity in Japan, setting a new record of "the largest number of Tokyo Dome and national dome performances in the history of overseas artists."
