MAMAMOO Hwasa's New Song Is Response to R-19 Dance Controversy: 'I love my body...'

Prior to the official release of her new song, "I Love My Body," MAMAMOO Hwasa revealed that the track is actually a response to her R-19 dance controversy that gained her severe maliciously-written comments.

MAMAMOO Hwasa Confesses Crying 'Most Tears' During Her 19+ Dance Scandal

On September 4, MAMAMOO Hwasa was introduced as a guest on seasoned singer Sung Si Kyung's YouTube channel. Here, the idol confessed her true feelings about her indecency controversy for the first time.

As a brief background, the idol was accused of sensationalism after doing an R-19 dance at a university festival in May. The choreo includes licking her hands and sweeping up her private parts while performing "Don't Give It."

Aside from the intense criticism and hateful comments she received at the time, Hwasa was sued by a student parent protection group for "indecency" as well.

Initially, Hwasa didn't seem to care much about it, but it turned out that she actually had a hard time.

During the broadcast, she talked about her honest feelings about it and narrated how she became aware of the scandal.

"I went on a MAMAMOO US tour and on the day I arrived, I've been receiving a lot of Kakao Talk messages so I thought, 'Something might have happened again.' I prayed and decided to take a look and I was controversial about my performance on the stage so I initially thought, 'I see.' But I didn't expect the level of malicious comments to be too high."

While Hwasa said she wasn't usually affected by such comments, it was so strong that it kept bothering her, and finally broke down to tears after her New York stage.

"The first performance was in New York, and I should have continued to manage my mental state until then. I tried to organize things with the mindset, 'Let's just go the way I used to,' but it kept bothering me. (Still) I pretended to feel nothing and cried as soon as I finished the performance."

She continued:

"I arrived at the hotel and took the elevator up, and all the members were saying, 'Good job~' and I think I cried the most this year. Tears were pouring down like waterfalls.

I thought it wouldn't work, so I said I'd get some air, and it felt like I filmed a movie on my way out of the hotel. There was no one, so I just ran to the parking lot crying. I broke down there and cried until I came to my senses."

MAMAMOO Hwasa Reveals 'I Love My Body' Is Response to R-19 Controversy

In the same broadcast, Hwasa then showed how she is overcoming the issue through her upcoming digital single, "I Love My Body," set to be released on September 6.

This will be her first comeback after signing with P NATION.

"It has a simple but heavy message. Because I felt that way. The reason I chose this song after my name became a little noisy was due to my controversy over obscenity for a while."

The "Maria" singer explained that initially she was depressed and was struggling with what kind of song should she release next. She hadn't signed with P NATION at the time but Psy sent her the song and she immediately fell in love with it.

"I smiled for the first time during our US tour after listening to the new song. I'm having a hard time because of my indecency controversy, but it was pleasant to suddenly shout 'I love my body.' It refreshes your mood. I felt a lot better after listening to that song, and I thought it would be good to just do this for my next song."

Hwasa clarified that it's not a "diss" to anyone or a message about ignoring criticism, rather, it was a response to spread the mindset:

"I think it’s right to ignore ridiculously hurtful things.“
