IVE & Red Velvet's MV Concepts Compared by Stans in Online Discussion

On October 8, an open forum was established online, which brought two popular girl groups into the thread. These girl groups were none other than IVE and Red Velvet.

In the discussion, the original author drew out several comeback teaser photos of the two groups, which bore resemblances with each other. The photos also included scenes from music videos such as "Bad Boy," "Monster," "Off The Record," "Birthday," and IVE's "Baddie" MV teaser.

The comparisons were met with several comments from netizens, who laid out their opinions on the similarities. Netters mentioned several artists and music videos in the thread, while calling out the features that are commonly used for a K-pop music video.

Read their comments below:

  •  "That first picture reminded me of f(x)'s 'Pink Tape.' The last one is just a star, while the bunny hat was also super overused everywhere.
NewJeans also used those bunny hats and wilderness shots have been extensively used everywhere in other MVs already."
  •  "The star, fur hat, whispering gestures, these are all super common. It's not like it's some unique theme. So it's plagiarism if they overlap?
It reminds me of a time when people called each other plagiarizers in 2017 when someone used fruits, summer themes, or CGI."
  •  "This is the MV of STAYC that was released lately. Isn't this hat super common?"
  •  "The candles weren't even from an IVE MV, it was just a VCR for MMA and you're just bashing them. For the rest of the photos, they're all commonly used in K-pop, and no one would even think of it as plagiarism."

Meanwhile, in a separate discussion, stans argued that music videos are normally inspired by something. They claimed that it's normal for K-pop MVs to have similar gimmicks, shots, and props, while others conveyed that it won't matter as long as the song is good.

  •  "It's extremely difficult to find MVs that are 100 percent original in K-pop. Everything was done by someone else already one way or the other."
  •  "Just enjoy the song and if it bothers you all that much, then go away."
  •  "They were probably inspired, but who cares?"
  •  "As a Luvie, it's okay to be remotely similar to RV given how little content I receive. I just have high expectations for the music since it's IVE."
