NewJeans, IVE, More Rank High in 2023 Genie Music Survey

Following BTS's hiatus from the music industry, girl groups rose to higher heights in K-pop this year.

According to a survey conducted by Genie Music from January 1 to December 10, 2023, eight of the top ten songs of the year were released by girl groups. The survey was commissioned by Munhwa Ilbo.

In particular, NewJeans and IVE showed remarkable achievements this year. NewJeans's "Ditto" and "Hype Boy" took first and second place, respectively. Meanwhile, IVE's "I AM" came in third. '

NewJeans also swept the fifth and tenth spot with their songs "OMG" and "Attention." On the other, IVE's "Kitsch" ranked at sixth place, while "After Like" snagged the seventh place spot.

Besides IVE and NewJeans, another girl group made the top ten. (G)I-DLE's hit song "Queencard" ranked in eighth place.

Only two spots from the top ten were not occupied by girl groups. Fourth place was awarded to Younha's "Event Horizon." Number nine is the only non-Korean song in the top ten - it is American soloist Charlie Puth's song "I Don't Think That I Like Her."

Genie Music Dubs 2023 As The Year of "Girl Groups"

Girl groups dominated not only the top ten, but even the top 20. In their release, Genie Music was quoted saying, "'Ditto' is the third girl group to rank at the top on the annual Genie Chart in the past ten years, following TWICE in 2016 with 'CHEER UP' and (G)I-DLE in 2022 with 'TOMBOY.' Girl groups are expanding their fandom and becoming stronger and stronger."

Even when expanding the scope to the top 20, girl groups continue to dominate the list. IVE's "LOVE DIVE" ranked at 12th place. LE SSERAFIM claimed two entries in the top 20, with "ANTIFRAGILE" ranking at 13th and "UNFORGIVEN" at 20th.

Aespa's "Spicy" grabbed the 14th spot, while BLACKPINK member Jisoo's solo debut "FLOWER" ranked at 15th. NewJeans made an appearance again in the top 20, with "Super Shy" ranking at 18th. To summarize, girl groups made up 70% of the top 20.

It is worth noting that not a single boy group release made it to the top 20. The absence of boy groups songs in this year's Genie chart could be due to BTS's hiatus. The boy group has not made a comeback since Jin's military enlistment in December 2022.

The highest-ranking male soloist is Park Jae Jung's song "Let's Say Goodbye" in 11th place. In terms of boy groups, SEVENTEEN's sub-unit BSS was the most popular, with their song "Fighting (feat. Lee Young Ji)" ranking at 23rd.

Regarding the popularity of girl groups, Genie Music stated, "Girl groups received immense attention this year. Their overwhelming presence as they sing and dance has become mainstream." Additionally, they noted that male soloists saw more success than boy groups in 2023.
