Back in December 2023, Jeon Somi uploaded a "get ready with me" video to her TikTok. At the start of her video, she is seen taking a sip from a green Starbucks tumbler. That scene was also used in the thumbnail of her TikTok video.

This short snippet from TikTok earned major backlash. This is because Starbucks is currently the target of a major boycott movement, with many claiming the company is pro-Israel amid the Israel-Palestine Gaza conflict.

Despite Starbucks claiming they have no political affiliations, the company recently garnered flak for suing Workers United after the union shared pro-Palestine sentiments on social media. The company sued the union for using the brand's name and logo, stating it "angers customers" and could potentially damage the brand's reputation.

Due to the conflict, Jeon Somi earned backlash for being tone-deaf to the current situation in Gaza. Many believed she knew of the situation because she is one of the idols known for being "chronically online," or someone who always keeps up with trends.

Following the backlash, Jeon Somi took down the controversial TikTok. However, she did not publicly apologize for her actions. Instead, during a chat with a fan, she said she made some "dumb moves" but will continue to spread love to everyone. She hopes that she will also receive some love back.
