After LE SSERAFIM Kim Chaewon and Sakura revealed their waist measurements, an ongoing debate among K-netz and fans regarding this started. Why did it become an issue in the first place?

On February 24, the two K-pop idols appeared in MBC's entertainment show, "The Manager."

On this day, comedienne and broadcaster Lee Young Ja asked them about their waist sizes, to which Sakura and Chaewon replied, "17 inches." Surprising both viewers and MCs, the stars then explained that their waist sizes were measured when they haven't had any food yet.

Anachronistic? LE SSERAFIM's Waist Measurements Spark Concerns

Following the broadcast, MC Lee Young Ja and LE SSERAFIM both raised brows, with the former being criticized for asking waist sizes that netizens considered as "anachronistic" and "insensitive."

Netizens who watched the broadcast are pouring out comments such as:

• “Why on earth are they asking about waist size?”
• “Isn’t this an anachronistic question?”
• “Is this a show that recommends a thin body?”
• “Let’s stop asking things like this on broadcast anymore.”

Recently, there are increasing concerns on idols being forced to lose weight and have plastic surgeries just to attain the set idol's body standard.

Some pointed out that this is an anachronistic question in the sense that asking women about their waist sizes is outdated itself, not to mention that it is not good information to be spread among teens.

Another thing is that LE SSERAFIM having small waist sizes will make them as "objects of envy" as idols posed the idea that "thin waist" can be considered as a symbol of a "well-managed" idol.

This is not to mention that the quintet is a popular group that can become a "wannabe" of the younger generation, especially female teenagers.

While there is nothing wrong with having a small waist, the main problem is the way how most idols lose and maintain weight.

Rather than the healthy way, several stars resorted to doing "extreme diet methods" including starving themselves, which later caused them severe stress and other health problems and conditions. This is also related to the rising number of artists making a hiatus due to poor health.

However, there are strong objections that such criticism is excessive.

Regarding of Lee Young Ja, she became known in the entertainment industry for her confidence, regardless of her body size.

To Lee, "small waist" LE SSERAFIM that contrasts with her might have been simply amazing.

The main reason for the objection is that linking this to idol group's weight loss problem is a logical leap forward.

Meanwhile, amid controversies, LE SSERAFIM is continuously making waves with its news EP, "EASY" released on February 19.
