Pokemon X And Y Release Update [VIDEO]: What Is Pokemon Dream Radar And Is This The Nintendo 3DS Solution For Backwards Compatibility?

Although we are getting ever closer to the October 12 release of Pokemon X and Pokemon Y for the 3DS, one pertinent issue remains for long time Pokemon fans: backwards compatibility.

As reported earlier, the special Pokemon roundtable with The Pokemon Company CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara and Game Freak director Junichi Masuda at the E3 Expo revealed very little on the issue, except that they reportedly don't have a clear-cut solution yet and were working on it.

As noted by IGN, importing Pokemon from previous generations would be tricky because the DS and 3DS do not communicate directly.

A possible solution may be some sort of DLC upon release, but the matter of pricing and content outside of backwards compatibility may complicate matters.

Another possible solution, however, is one that is already available to 3DS, the eShop application called Pokemon Dream Radar.

Released alongside Pokemon Black and White 2, Dream Radar is "an entirely 2D experience that lets players use several different features of the Nintendo 3DS system, including the Nintendo 3DS camera, motion control and augmented-reality technology."

"Pokémon caught using the Pokémon Dream Radar can be transferred into Pokemon Black Version 2 and Pokemon White Version 2, helping players build their roster of Pokémon."

With an eShop app that already communicates with Black and White 2, making the application communicate with X and Y as well could allow gamers to transfer their stored monsters from Black and White 2 to X and Y.

As noted by a Pokejungle visitor, Dragon Quest Monsters already utilizes an eShop app to achieve DS to 3DS communication.

"I'm pretty confident they'll find a way. If, however they don't, I think there'll be hell of a lot of Pokémon from other regions available in Kalos," noted a Pokejungle contributor.

Currently priced at $2.99, such a move would not only make the eShop application more popular, but it's also a fun way of solving this tedious problem.

So just in case, perhaps saving all your Pokemon onto Black and White 2 might not be such a bad idea, if you haven't already!
