Review: San-E Shines On The New Rphabet Track 'Black Suit' [VIDEO]

Hip-hop, in the beginning, was all about simplicity.

A couple of records with extended breaks and an MC with something to say were all Bronx trailblazers like Kool DJ Herc needed to tear the roof off of a party, inventing rap music in the process.

There was an almost fetishistic love of the beat and other sonic shapes creatable with the repetition that sampling allowed, in the early days of hip-hop.

There is a stripped down quality in "Black Suit," the new single by rapper Rphabet and featuring San-E that seems to salute those magical first days of rap music, but the production isn't confined to just 1980s hip-hop.

There are shades of the Neptunes-produced Snoop Dogg track "Drop It Like It's Hot" as well as the nasty snyths of the Beat Boys final hit "Make Some Noise."

There are even shades of industrial acts like Nine Inch Nails or Ministry that rose to prominence in the 1990s.

The overall sound of "Black Suit" is a throwback to the days when a rap song didn't need to feel like a Hollywood blockbuster, but the rapping on "Black Suit" is closer to the chaotic energy of those electro acts.

And while both MCs deliver impassioned rhyming, San E's rapping on "Black Suit," particularly in the first few verses, is inspired.

The rapper is not afraid to be dark, pushing boundaries in a way that is edgier than what is typical for K-pop, even South Korean hip-hop.

Particularly one of the song's English lines "my skin yellow, but soul blacker than yours," could upset some listeners.

But San-E's powerful delivery in the song's a capella climax makes it difficult not to appreciate his attempt to push the envelope into something dangerous.

This darker sound is perfectly complemented by the music video for "Black Suit."

Director Keekanz effectively employs simple black and white projected animation to transform the artists' faces into skeletons or shoot laser beams out of their sunglasses.

The video for "Black Suit," like the song itself, employs simple techniques and styles we have experienced before. But they are approached with a freshness, an enthusiasm and with enough fire to make them seem irresistibly new.
