Grand Prix Final Figure Skating 2013 Preview: Mao Asada, Patrick, Ashley Wagner, Yuzuru Hanyu, And Other Top Qualifers!
The 2013 to 2014 Grand Prix Final figure skating season is coming to a head with the Grand Prix Final next week, and some of the biggest names we are expecting at the Sochi Olympics will battle it out!
Here is a brief preview of the 2013 Grand Prix Final of figure skating.
Despite the controversy over his previous world champion titles, Canadian Patrick Chan is the top qualifier in the men's figure skating discipline of the Grand Prix series. He has the season's top Short Program, Free Skating, and combined total score. Beating him at the Grand Prix Final and even at the Sochi Olympics will be very, very difficult to accomplish.
On the ladies' side, the 2013 Grand Prix Final will be a battle between Japan's Mao Asada, America's Ashley Wagner, and four Russian youngsters who are clearly motivated to demonstrate their home country's competitive vim and vigor. Although Asada has the top scores in the discipline, expect a decent fight from Julia Lipnitskaia and Ashley Wagner, who have posted the second and third best scores, respectively.
For pairs, the 2013 Grand Prix Final gold medal will almost certainly go to Russian pair Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov, barring a disaster. Much like Patrick Chan, they have separated themselves from the field with nearly a 30-point difference to their closest competitors' scores. The competition for silver and bronze will be much more intriguing.
In ice dance, the narrative will be focused on the battle between Maryl Davis and Charlie White, and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir. Although Davis and White have a higher overall total, one mistake from either team could upset the balance.
