Mayweather On Pacquiao As Mandatory Contender: He Don’t Deserve A Shot

When Filipino boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao won over Brandon Rios last month in Macau, fans were quick to say that it is high time for him to fight the undefeated Floyd Mayweather.

The World Boxing Council echoed the voice of the public as it recently named the first and only eight-division world champion as Mayweather's mandatory challenger for the welterweight title. The American boxer has been holding such title for a long time and the WBC thinks that it is important enough for 'Money' that they can convince him to approve the fight against Pacquiao.

However, with an interview with Fight Hype, the undefeated 36-year old American remained defiant of the fight. He even said that Pacquiao can have the 147-belt if he wants.

"Everybody's talking about the title he's (Pacquiao's) the mandatory. He can have the belt! A belt don't make me. A belt doesn't define Floyd Mayweather," he said.

He added that Pacquiao being designated as the mandatory fighter is questionable.

"Here's the Manny Pacquiao story. Manny Pacquiao was at welterweight. He lost to Timothy Bradley, no matter how you cut it, how you slice it, he lost to Timothy Bradley. He got knocked out by Marquez. He came back and went the distance with a lightweight. And now all of a sudden, he's the mandatory for my title."

Mayweather made it clear that Pacquiao doesn't deserve a shot at him, emphasizing the Filipino fighter's dipping pay-per-view numbers.

Negotiations between two of the most colorful boxer in this generation is yet to be opened but as critics see it, Mayweather holds the aces for it to happen. Pacquiao is coming off twin losses before defeating Rios. Meanwhile, his American counterpart is coming off a victory against Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez last September. That fight raked in a boxing record $41.5 million. Mayweather also thinks that Pacquiao's camp is eager to fight him so he can take care of his tax woes with the IRS.
