Colorado Sale Of Marijuana For Recreational Use Starts; Find Out The Things You Can Do Under The State's New Cannabis Bill

Colorado started 2014 on a 'high' note. On January 1, Wednesday, the Centennial State has started selling marijuana for recreational use based on a bill approved by voters in November 2012. With this new cannabis bill, Colorado became the first US state to legalize small amounts of the plant for recreational use and regulate it like a common commodity.

The first sun of 2014 hasn't come out yet but many Coloradans are already out on the road heading to marijuana shops. According to Denver Post, "a few people queued up outside pot shops early Wednesday to celebrate and claim bragging rights, but longer lines began forming later in the morning." People celebrated the first day of fully legalized marijuana as if they've won in the lottery. Some even described the event as "Holiday Miracle" and 'a thing of beauty.'

"I'm at a loss for words. Happy New Year!" said Lucas DaSilva of Georgia who drove through the night and slept in his car while waiting for a shop to open. "This is history I just made. I can't believe it. Such a blessing."

Things you need to know about Colorado's 'improved' cannabis law:

  • Marijuana is sold only to people of legal age, 21 that is.
  • You can buy but you can't smoke it in public.
  • You can obtain weed in different forms. Shops are selling cannabis buds on their own as well as pre-rolled spliffs and all manner of drugs paraphernalia.
  • Pay only with cash, cards are not accepted.
  • Tourists from different parts of the country (or the world) are allowed to buy in Colorado but they cannot take the cannabis home.
  • Recreational or "retail" marijuana are more expensive than medical marijuana
  • You can go to the same shops multiple times in day as long as you don't go beyond the limit of marijuana per person.
