The 28th Golden Disk Awards were a star studded affair which returned to Korea in 2014 after previously being held abroad in Malaysia. SM Entertainment's EXO received the highest honor with the Disk Daesang for their 2013 album XOXO. EXO also received a Bonsang Award in the album category. PSY, who is preparing for a comeback in 2014, received the Digital Daesang for Gentleman which was his follow up to the worldwide phenomenon Gangnam Style. With his win, PSY clenched a top honor for YG Entertainment. YG Entertainment was also represented by girl group 2NE1 at the awards, but G-Dragon and Big Bang were noticeably absent.

With their Disk Daesang win, EXO has led SM Entertainment to receive the top honor six years in a row. EXO along with label mates f(x) delivered an excellent tribute to SM Entertainment's prior success at the Golden Disk Awards with a stage that featured EXO performing TVXQ's Mirotic and Super Junior's Sorry Sorry. In tribute to Girls Generation's Digital Daesang for the 26th Golden Disk Awards f(x) performed a portion of The Boys.

The popularity of EXO could be heard throughout the theater from the very loud fan chants of the audience. In 2014, the challenge for EXO will be to create a follow up album that can top the success of XOXO. Their holiday album, Miracles in December, hinted at the musical evolution within the group. With their solid stage performance and confidence when receiving awards, EXO has proven that they are a youthful act who will continue to dominate K-Pop
