Jodi Arias Trial Update Today HLN: Trial Date Set for Man Infatuated with Jodi Arias; David Lee Simpson Threatened Nancy Grace and Jane Velez Mitchell Over Jodi Arias TV Coverage

Jodi Arias Trial Update Today HLN:  David Lee Simpson, an auto worker from New York who is reportedly infatuated with Jodi Arias will get his day in court. Simpson threatened TV commentators Nancy Grace and Jane Velez Mitchell over their coverage of Jodi Arias along with another unnamed woman. Grace and Mitchell are hosts on Turner Broadcasting's HLN network covering the Jodi Arias trial.

A trial date has been set for David Lee Simpson. Court records show the trial was set for April 1 after a hearing in the case Thursday. Simpson threatened the TV commentators via Twitter.  Simpson was in New York when he sent the tweets, but Arizona asserted jurisdiction since the threats were made against individuals covering the Jodi Arias trial that was occurring in Maricopa County. Authorities say both HLN anchor Nancy Grace and Jane Velez-Mitchell have been in Arizona. Investigators say Simpson, of Bath, N.Y., also threatened an Arizona woman.

Simpson is reported to be infatuated with the convicted murderer Jodi Arias. He was arrested last week for planning to kill the divisive who reported heavily on the trial. He has pleaded not guilty.

According to KPHO, Simpson was arrested on July 17, at a traffic stop by Bath police. Cops found multiple guns, ammunition, handcuffs, zip ties, binoculars, a police radio and a news clipping about December's mass shooting in Newtown, Conn. The arresting officer said "This suspect was on his way south with enough weapons in his car to do serious harm to someone. Fortunately, we acted quickly enough, and in doing so, were able to stop him before anything could transpire."

In a statement Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., said "Threats against anyone have to be taken seriously. This suspect was on his way south with enough weapons in his car to do serious harm to someone. Fortunately, we acted quickly, and in so doing were able to stop him before anything could transpire."

Jodi Arias was convicted of first-degree murder on May 8, 2013 in the June 2008 death of Travis Alexander, but the jury couldn't reach a unanimous decision on whether to sentence the former waitress to death or life in prison.

Alexander was found murdered in the shower of his Mesa, Ariz., home in June 2008. Alexander's throat had been violently slit, he was stabbed 27 times and shot in the head. The Jodi Arias trial hypnotized America as details emerged about the couple's sex life. Jodi Arias took the stand for 18 days to testify that killed Alexander in self-defense. Arias said Travis Alexander was given to fits of terror and that he had an outburst after she dropped a camera while they were shooting a sexy video.

Under Arizona law, prosecutors had the option of taking the death penalty off the table. If they took away the death penalty option, a judge would have decided whether Jodi Arias would either spend the rest of her life behind bars, or be eligible for release after 25 years.

Jodi Arias retrial is set for March 17. The new Jodi Arias jury will decide whether convicted killer gets life in prison or the death penalty.
