Apple Worldwide Developers Conference: Apple Enters Home Automation Market With ‘Home Kit’; New Product Unlocks Your Doors, Turns On Lights, Etc.

Apple Worldwide Developers Conference: The June 2 unveiling of the Cupertino tech giant included the expected updates for the iOS 8 and the new OS X Yosemite. But the company has also signaled its entry to a new market segment, which it began slowly encroaching with the Apple TV.

Yesterday, Apple unveiled its much rumored and highly anticipated home automation product, the “Home Kit.” According to Barrons, the “Home Kit” serves as a common network framework that coordinate between the various third-party home automation accessories. The new Apple product can unlock your doors, turn on off your light switches, etc.

Apple worked with leaders in home automation like Philips, Skybell, and Honeywell among others for the project. Prospective Home Kit users will be able to control their smart locks, lights, cameras, doors, thermostats, plugs, and switches from one app with secure pairing to ensure only your iOS –powered device works with your property features and appliances.

Tuaw.com noted that services can be controlled individually or grouped together as “scenes.” The home automation kit also has Siri integration, allowing future users to speak a command like “get ready for bed” and have their garage door automatically close, their doors lock, and the thermostat lowered to a nice cool sleeping temperature.

The Verge reported that Apple will run a certification program to go along with HomeKit, which will guarantee that products support the new features. There are about a dozen more partners aside from the earlier mentioned – Philips, Skybell, and Honeywell.

The Home Kit is Apple’s first step into the expanding smart home market. Smart home products have been crippled by compatibility issues and have had to do a whole lot of work to make sure that their supposedly “smart homes” can function, The Verge noted.

The tech site noted that with Apple introducing a protocol that will let devices work together through one of the most popular phones around, the company can very quickly start to straighten the mess.
