Floyd Mayweather Fights Out Of Golden Boy Promotions; ‘Money’ Follows CEO Richard Schaefer’s Resignation?

Floyd Mayweather fights from hereon won't be with Golden Boy Promotions as "Money" followed CEO Richard Schaefer's resignation from the Oscar dela Hoya-led company.

After Richard Schaefer announced that he's stepping down as CEO of Golden Boy Promotions, Complex writer Jose Martinez said that everybody was waiting on the other shoe to fall even as ESPN's Dan Rafael suggested that the resignation will change boxing's landscape going forward.

"A couple of hours later, Floyd Mayweather, who has worked with Golden Boy since his bout with Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, has decided to follow in the footsteps of Schaefer and cut ties with the company as well," he wrote.

According to ESPN, Mayweather Promotions has been co-promoting Floyd Mayweather's fights along with Golden Boy Promotions after the undefeated champion slugged in out with Oscar dela Hoya. That fight went on to become the top pay-per-view buy after generating 2.5 million subscriptions, the website said.

However, the two boxing greats have no love lost for each other so when Richard Schaefer bolted Golden Boy, his most prized ward went along with him.

When Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe told ESPN asked for the possibility of working again with Golden Boy without Richard Schaefer, he said, "absolutely not."

"We have a great working relationship with Richard Schaefer and that will never change. Richard is a good friend and a great businessman and an excellent promoter," Ellerbe explained.

"Richard will have an impact in anything that he decides to do, a tremendous impact. He built that company from the ground up and did a phenomenal job. We've had a very close relationship for a number of years and worked hand-in-hand on a number of great fights," he added.

Meanwhile, Ellerbe also hinted that they might promote Floyd Mayweather fights going forward.

"I have a tremendous team and staff and we continue to expand year by year and we're ready to go," he said.
