[Album Review] BEAST Brilliantly Embraces A New Sound In 'Good Luck' [AUDIO]

Cube Entertainment released the sixth mini album for BEAST on June 16 entitled “Good Luck.” The album features seven tracks including the previously released single “No More.”

“Good Luck” incorporates a wide range of musical elements including electronic dance, with BEAST approaching a more intricate sound.

“Good Luck” follows the 2013 studio album “Hard to Love, How to Love” which featured songs that were co-written by Kim Tae Woo and BEAST member Yong Jun Hyung. Yong Jun Hyung and Kim Tae Woo have collaborated in writing the majority of the songs for “Good Luck,” including the title track.

The opening track “We Up” sets the uptempo tone for the album. “We Up” reflects hip hop and electronic dance music elements.

The upbeat sentiment transitions to a more emotionally charged one with “Good Luck.” “Good Luck” is influenced by the conflicted sentiments that are experienced during break ups.

“Dance With U” continues the party vibe of “Good Luck”.

“No More” is an R&B track which succinctly frames the vocal structure of BEAST. “No More” is a standout track for the album, with the song receiving positive attention during its prior release.

Yong Jun Hyung incorporates hip hop verses into the song which are subtle, relevant, and not overpowering.

BEAST member Lee Kikwang showcases his lyrical talent with the track “History.” As another solid R&B track, “History” serves as an excellent follow up to “No More.”

“History” and “No More” highlight the musical relevance of BEAST, whose previous work within R&B has attracted the attention of American artists such as Omarion.

“Tonight, I'll Be At Your Side” expresses sweet and gentle emotion through its 1980s soft rock sound. The track is reminiscent of an American AM radio song from the eighties, with its swelling chorus and repetitive refrain.

The album closes with the pop rock track “Sad Movie,” which interestingly resembles the structure of an original soundtrack single. Lyrics such as “Tears more than laughter, sorrow more than happiness” deliver the morose message of lost love.

“Good Luck” is a departure from the original musical style of BEAST, delivering the K-Pop group into a new era.
