Maria Sharapova Faces Backlash For Snubbing Cricket Legend Sachin Tendulkar; Candy Business ‘Sugarpova’ Also Criticized For Causing Obesity

Tennis darling Maria Sharapova is being criticized for her failure to recognize Indian cricket athlete Sachin Tendulkar who watched her Wimbledon game on Saturday. Outraged fans of Tendulkar posted thousands of angry comments on Sharapova's Facebook account.

The hashtag #whoismariasharapova also surfaced following her alleged snubbing of Tendulkar. It started when Sharapova was allegedly asked if she could recognize the man beside footballer David Beckham and former cricket captain Andrew Strauss. She reportedly couldn't recognize the man.

As per netizen Abhishek Sircar, Sharapova is fully aware of who Tendulkar is but intentionally said she didn't know him. In 2003, Canon allegedly wanted to shoot an advertisement with Sharapova and Tendulkar which the latter declined because of a conflict with another company. The advertisement did not happen but years later, Canon was still able to get Tendulkar as its ambassador sans Sharapova. Such claim has never been confirmed by Canon or the athletes.

Aside from her alleged snubbing of the cricket athlete, Sharapova is also receiving criticism for her candy business, Sugarpova. Neil Gibbs, one of Huffington Post's critics, believes that is an irony for a physically fit athlete to promote businesses that would promote unhealthy eating.

"Why would a woman who has made her fortune through a combination of being very fit and looking good wish to peddle a product that is known to cause obesity and spots?" said Gibbs.

In 2013, likewise received the same type of criticism from the World Obesity Forum. As per the forum, Sharapova can only promote her sweets if she includes a reminder that consumers should play tennis 16 hours a day to still look fit.
The blonde beauty once defended her business in an interview: "Of course, sugar is meant to be bad for you but my philosophy has always been everything in moderation."
