‘Downton Abbey’ Season 5 Cast Filming At ‘Harry Potter’ Movies Location: Maggie Smith’s Professor McGonagall Returns To World Of Hogwarts, Castle Attracts 800,000 Visitors A Year

In news set to delight lovers of both English movies and television shows, "Downton Abbey" is filming scenes for Season 5 at an old "Harry Potter" location!

Alnwick Castle, in England's Northumberland region, will be partially closed off to the public while filming takes place for the ITV period drama's season 5.

"A filming notice on the venue's website says: 'Please note that various areas of Alnwick Castle will be closed or have limited access on 28 July - 8th August (inclusive), due to the filming of a major ITV period drama," the Daily Mail reported.

Alnwick Castle has featured in a number of other productions in the past, most noticeably providing a location for the "Harry Potter" movies. "Potter" fans will note this means, that in a roundabout way, the much-loved character of Professor McGonagall will be heading back to the world of Hogwarts for some more witchcraft and wizardry.

McGonagall was played by Dame Maggie Smith in the "Harry Potter" movies, and also plays the role of Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham in "Downton Abbey".

The previous "Potter" movies location attracts a staggering 800,000 visitors a year - and according to the Daily Mail, provides broomstick training as a particular highlight for Hogwarts fans. They're more than happy to show off their magical history - "Scenes filmed at the castle include Harry's first Quidditch lesson and the crash-landing of the flying Ford Anglia," the Alnwick Castle website informs visitors.

The castle is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Northumberland, and the pair were keen to get into the world of "Downton Abbey" season 5 too.

"As we know from experience, filming somewhere like Alnwick Castle can be very disruptive, but when we received ITV's enquiry, my wife and I felt that we could not miss the opportunity for the castle and town to be associated with such a hugely popular drama series," said the Duke of Northumberland, as quoted in Vanity Fair.
