Album Review: SHINee's Taemin Is Set To Take The Lead Over Other Solo Artists With 'Ace' [AUDIO]

SM Entertainment has released “Ace,” the first solo album for SHINee's Taemin.

When the solo project was initially announced, skeptics questioned why Taemin was selected for a solo album over SHINee members Jonghyun or Key.

K-Pop solo projects can often be a strategic tactic to deflect attention from the delay of a comprehensive group album. However, “Ace” is a well-crafted album which musically suits Taemin in a manner similar to Super Junior-M Henry's solo releases.

Prior to “Ace,” Taemin contributed his voice as a solo artist to the “To The Beautiful You” original soundtrack and was also featured with Super Junior's Eunhyuk on Henry's “Trap.”

With “Ace,” Taemin proves that he has gone through a vast musical transformation since SHINee debuted with “Replay” in 2008.

“Ace” is a solid, six track mini album that is devoid of the naivete which often pervades the signature sound of SHINee. Taemin may be the youngest member of the group but “Ace” reflects a musical departure from formulaic simplicity. With his first solo release, Taemin establishes that he is a formidable K-Pop solo artist.

The album opens with the soulful title track, “Ace.” “Ace” demonstrates the departure from the whimsical style that is synonymous with SHINee, while venturing into the skillful R&B territory that has started to define EXO. “Ace” captures your attention, compelling listeners to remain for the rest of the album.

“Danger” is the first promotional track from “Ace.” On the 90s pop inspired track, Taemin delivers vocals which are reminiscent of Michael Jackson, at certain points. “Danger” is one of the most danceable tracks from “Ace” and is a certifiable ear worm.

The third track on “Ace” is the Latin influenced song “Experience.” “Experience” is infused with guitar riffs and electronic accompaniment, which are complimentary to breezy vocals presented by Taemin. One aspect of the song that could have been cut during production is the awkwardly positioned break which approaches an EDM drop.

EXO's Kai is featured on the lone collaboration on the album, “Pretty Boy.” The track utilized an interesting combination of brassy horns and electronic accompaniment which borders on electro-swing. Kai delivers sharper edged vocals which provide an appropriate contrast to Taemin's sweet tone.

Like “Pretty Boy,” “Wicked” provides a musical juxtaposition and exceeds the expectations of a K-Pop boy band solo release. “Wicked” combines a contemporary sound with elements of jazz, in a clever way.

“Ace” concludes with the soulful ballad “Play Me.” “Play Me” serves as a delightful conclusion to an album which deserves attention from K-Pop fans.
