Puff Daddy's New Album Is EDM? Rapper Releases Record Entitled '11 11' Completely For Free

Rapper and producer Puff Daddy's new album is, much to everyone's surprise, an electronic dance music (EDM) album.  The album, called "11 11" which he worked on with Israeli producer Guy Gerber, is completely for free.

The idea for Puff Daddy's new album reportedly came to be when the rapper first contacted Gerber in 2009 to ask him to contribute a track to the rapper's would-be album "Last Train to Paris" (2010), which prominently featured electronica elements in addition to its predominant hip hop themes.

A year later the two started working on tracks together for Puff Daddy's new album. While the duo would continue exchanging ideas and sending tracks to each other over the next years, work on the album was slow, resulting in the delays of its release.

The Puff Daddy's new album was released on Gerber's label Rumors and contains 11 tracks. Puff Daddy, whose real name is Sean John Combs, originally intended to name the album "Ketamine," but has decided otherwise and said that he wants fans to know that it is "not an EDM album."

According to Gerber, he finds it "a bigger challenge to do something abstract, something underground". The album is "very deep and emotional, as opposed to something in your face," he added.

The Israeli producer said he and Combs "didn't have a vision." The rapper had told him that he wanted "to do something [his] friends would like." After "enjoying experimenting," the album "began to take shape".

Gerber said he didn't know what music fans would make of "11 11."

"Context is very important," he said. "If some people come out of curiosity and find and unexpected result, I would love that," the producer said. "There's enough shock element in this."

The website EDM Chicago described the Puff Daddy's new album as fitting "for the underground music scene, relying on production and sonic exploration" rather than hype elements.

The album may be previewed on Vice magazine's electronic-dedicated website Thump and downloaded through online dance music community Beatport.
