Did JJCC Fail To Deliver On The Hype With Their First Album? [Opinion]

One of the most hyped K-Pop groups of 2014 was the Jackie Chan project, JJCC. JJCC (Double JC) received widespread press including coverage from many mainstream U.S. outlets.

There were high expectations for the group, who previously released the single “At First” in March 2014.  The idea of a K-Pop group that is under of the tutelege of one of a world famous martial arts actor was intriguing to most, but there were many would doubted the ability of JJCC to deliver.

JJCC has released their first self-titled mini album, at the worst possible time.

JJCC is attempting to demonstrate their musical abilities during a promotional period in which YG Entertainment’s Winner released their debut full album. In addition to Winner, BTS has released their first full album which is garnering widespread acclaim. As if the timing couldn’t get any worse, K-Pop kings Super Junior have announced their comeback at the end of August.

The unfortunate timing of their first album creates a situation in which JJCC appears far less competent than the groups who are currently promoting.

The self-titled album has three songs, with "One Way" or “Bing, Bing, Bing” serving as the lead promotional track. “One Way” is an uptempo song, with the music video highlighting the members of JJCC.  The music video for "One Way" features acclaimed Taekwondo team K-Tigers, who deliver acrobatic stunts.

“You’re Leaving” is a musically sound ballad that frames the vocal abilities of the group. “Be Good” is the most soulful track on the album. While slow, R&B songs are often difficult to promote the track stands up best against the recent releases of BTS and Winner.

JJCC will grow over time and will hopefully be able to demonstrate that their talent is on par with the expectations that were place upon them.
