The MTV Video Music Awards 2014: The Unofficial Guide To The Gossip, Performances, And Awards

Remember that time Britney Spears kissed Madonna? How about the first time Miley Cyrus twerked on live television? You must remember that time Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift's acceptance speech right? Well the obvious thing all of these events have in common is that they all happened at the year's biggest night for pop culture icons: The MTV Video Music Awards. Or, as it's recently been shortened to, the VMAs.

This weekend stars will flood Inglewood, California's 'Fabulous' Forum for the annual award show. As the event usually shocks and offers plenty to watch for any pop culture fiend, it's important to know what to look for at this weekend's VMAs.

As far as performances are concerned, Nicki Minaj will be making waves for certain since she is set to perform "Anaconda," a NSFW song that samples the popular Sir Mix A Lot song, "Baby Got Back." In fact, Refinery 29 predicts that the rapper himself may even make an appearance. Nicki Minaj will also collaborate with newcomer Ariana Grande, who has been making news for herself since the release of her hit single "Problem" featuring Iggy Izalea.

Iggy Izalea will also perform later in the show and given her recent issues with Nicki Minaj, there may be some gossip worthy backstage interactions. Pitchfork however reports that most of that little comment Nicki made at the BET Music Awards was taken out of context.

The name of the night for performances will most likely however be Beyonce. She will not only be performing but will also be honored for her career in music with the Michael Jackson Vanguard award. With all the rumors floating around about the end of her marriage to Jay-z, especially on the heels of that infamous elevator video, perhaps fans will get a hint on the true status of the marriage.

Other artists set to perform include Taylor Swift, Jessie J, Maroon 5 (for the first time ever), and a comeback for veteran R&B artist, Usher.

As far as who will take home what is concerned, the competition for each category is steeped in pop veterans and music newbies. Long time music producer and fashion icon Pharrell, will face off with newcomer Iggy Azalea for Best Pop Video, but Iggy does have the advantage of being featured in Ariana Grande's bid for the same category.

The biggest example of this divergence of veterans versus newbies is defined in the Video of the Year category: Beyonce and Pharrell are both nominated and will have to fight off Miley Cyrus, Iggy Azalea, and breakout singer/songwriter Sia. Perhaps anyone but Beyonce should fear winning, if only because their acceptance speech might be interrupted by Kanye West.

The MTV Video Music Awards will air this Sunday at 9pm.
