Super Junior’s Wonderful & Slightly Strange Comeback Concepts

SM Entertainment’s Super Junior has avoided conventional K-Pop concepts to embrace some of the most innovative ideas in the industry. On August 21, the group delivered a comeback announcement for the upcoming release “Mamacita” with thrilling comeback photos.

The photos depict Super Junior as what could best be described as either mariachi or toreadors and cowboys. Between the title “Mamacita” and the visual clues, the upcoming Super Junior album promises to evoke images of the classic American Western film.

With K-Pop, there are often instances in which the comeback concept does not necessarily align with the music video for the lead track or the promotional materials. In the case of Super Junior, there is generally consistent implementation of concepts.

Super Junior and subsequently Super Junior-M have developed into trendsetters who maintain the capacity to make even the most mundane setting, like an office, appear fascinating.

In 2009, Super Junior would release one of their biggest hits “Sorry, Sorry.”

Over the years, the group transitioned from fancy-free boys into sophisticated gentlemen.

One of my favorite looks for Super Junior was for the 2010 comeback release “Bonamana.”

The group embraces the Flower Boy look which swept Korea, fueled in part by K-Dramas like “Boys Over Flowers” and “You’re Beautiful.”

For the “Mr. Simple” concept, SM Entertainment released teaser photos which left fans swooning. Siwon, in particular, set the hearts of fans racing with his lack of clothing.

Siwon embraces an athletic concept for Super Junior.

Super Junior channeled James Bond for “SPY” which was released in a repackage of “Sexy, Free & Single.”
