Taylor Swift's ‘Shake It Off’ Music Video Racist? Director Mark Romanek Fires Back After Rapper Earl Sweatshirt Accuses Pop Star Of ‘Perpetuating Black Stereotypes’

Is Taylor Swift's new music video racist? According to Earl Sweatshirt it is. The rapper took to Twitter to accuse the pop princess of "perpetuating black stereotypes" with the video for her single "Shake It Off."

However, video director Mark Romanek was quick to jump to Swifty's defense.

"[Haven't] watched the taylor swift video and I don't need to watch it to tell you that it's inherently offensive and ultimately harmful," wrote Earl Sweatshirt on Twitter.

The Los Angeles rapper and member of the hip-hop collective Odd Future, led by rapper/producer Tyler the Creator, let his distaste of the "Shake If Off" video show.

Earl Sweatshirt elaborated on his initial tweet, adding:

"for instance those of you who are afraid of black people but love that in 2014 it's ok for you to be trill or twerk or say n****"

Mark Romanek, the legendary music video director who helmed Taylor's "Shake It Off" video, spoke about Earl Sweatshirt's comments in an interview with Vulture.

"[H]e stated clearly that he hadn't seen the video and didn't even intend to watch it. So, respectfully, that sort of invalidates his observations from the get-go," said Romanek, who admitted to being a fan of Earl Sweatshirt's work.

The director then defended his work with Swift, continuing:

"And it's this one uninformed tweet that got reported on and rehashed, which started this whole 'controversy.' We simply choose styles of dance that we thought would be popular and amusing and cast the best dancers that were presented to us without much regard to race or ethnicity. If you look at it carefully, it's a massively inclusive piece. It's very, very innocently and positively intentioned. And - let's remember - it's a satirical piece. It's playing with a whole range of music-video tropes and clichés and stereotypes."

In the "Shake It Off" video, Swift can be seen with various groups of professional dancers. The types of dance include contemporary, ballet, and different forms of hip-hop.

In the Vulture interview, Romanek invited Earl Sweatshirt to watch the video before making a judgment.

"[If] Earl Sweatshirt was open-minded enough to take the four minutes to watch it," said Romanek, "he might see what the larger, humanistic, and utterly color-blind message was intended to be."

So could Taylor's new video Take a look and decide for yourself.
