Wes Welker Suspended 4 Games for Amphetamine Usage; Says He Is "As Shocked As Everyone" at The Charges [PHOTO]

Broncos slot receiver Wes Welker has recently been suspended four games for the use of amphetamines, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. He is guilty of violating the league's performance-enhancing drug policy, as he tested positive for a banned amphetamine. ESPN reports that he was excused from practice during August 20-21 in order to attend his appeal hearing, which he lost.

Welker e-mailed the Denver Post, saying, "I'm as shocked as everyone at today's news...I would NEVER knowingly take a substance to gain a competitive advantage in any way," asserting his belief in his innocence. He also wrote in his e-mail that he thinks the league's drug-policy procedures are clearly flawed, and that he will do everything in his power to make sure they are corrected.

The amphetamine test was taken from a sample shortly after Welker attended the Kentucky Derby. According to ESPN, Welker argued that the sample was tainted, but also wondered whether someone had slipped something in his drink at the Derby. USA Today reports that Welker is the second Bronco to be suspended from the team so far this season, as kicker Matt Prater will also miss the first four games due to repeated alcohol violations.

Broncos coach John Fox stated, "While it's unfortunate to not have [Welker] to start the year, I have full confidence in our wide receivers and expect that group to continue playing at a high level. I have no doubt that Wes will remain focused on his preparations for the season and stay in excellent shape during his time away from the team," conveying his faith in his players.

Welker will not be able to return to the active roster until October 6th. Welker has been busy trying to recuperate from his third concussion, which he suffered during the Bronco's August 23rd preseason game against the Houston Texans. He returned to the practice field this past Monday.
