Ray Rice Suspended By NFL; Terminated By Baltimore Ravens After A Video Of Him Punching His Wife Surfaced

After Ray Rice's video punching his wife in an elevator surfaced, the Baltimore Ravens decided to cut him off the team and the NFL put him on an indefinite suspension.

The team took to their official Twitter account on September 9 to make the announcement, saying: "The #Ravens have terminated RB Ray Rice's contract his afternoon."

Minutes later, the NFL, through a spokesperson, issued a statement on Twitter. "Roger Goodell has announced that based on new video evidence that became available today he has indefinitely suspended Ray Rice," tweeted Greg Aiello.

The Ray Rice video showed the running back punching his then-fiancee Janay Rice in the head, causing her to pass out.

A portion of the Ray Rice video posted by TMZ showing the athlete dragging his unconscious wife out of the elevator in a hotel in Atlantic City was previously released in February, prompting Rice's two-game suspension.

The NFL reportedly claimed that they did not see the complete footage before they suspended Rice back in February. "That video was not made available to us and no one in our office has seen it until today," an NFL representative said.

Meanwhile, ESPN's Jane McManus counters the statement, saying: "I was told NFL had access to same evidence of the police did when evaluating a 2-game suspension," tweeted McManus.

The New Yorker's executive editor Amy Davidson shared her thoughts about the debacle, saying: "An appalling thought is that plenty of supposedly responsible people did see that video tape, and saw in it only what they wanted to see - the willful rationalizations that sustain domestice violence."

Meanwhile, Fox News anchors weighed in on the Ray Rice video as well. Host Brian Kilmeade joked about it, saying "I think the message is, take the stairs."

In response to the outrage of people who have seen the Ray Rice video, the NFL will now reportedly suspend a player for six games when caught for the first time and will be suspended indefinitely if they repeat it.
