`Life-Long’ Football Fan Hannah Storm Asks ESPN Audience `What Does NFL Stand For’ After Ray Rice Tape; Sports Authorities Only Come Up With More Questions

ESPN anchor Hannah Storm asked the tough questions on last Sunday's edition of SportsCenter after she had to explain to her children why the football establishment looked the other way after the Ray Rice situation.

The "life-long fan" of football publicly deplored the abuse cases that NFL players are facing, demanding to know "what does the NFL stand for" after learning the organization will apparently stand for violence against women.

The issue has gotten much bigger since TMZ leaked the video of former Baltimore Raven Ray Rice knocked out his then-fiancée Janay Palmer in an Atlantic City hotel elevator. Even though the footage surfaced in February, the NFL didn't cut Ray until last week. Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL and the Ravens terminated his contract.

This summer Greg Hardy, Carolina Panthers defensive end was convicted for domestic violence. On Sunday, Hardy was deactivated for the Panthers' game against Tampa Bay. Adrian Peterson was indicted for child abuse after he allegedly beat his four-year-old son with a switch. Peterson was deactivated by the Minnesota Vikings during last Sunday's game against the New England Patriots, He was reinstated, but has again been benched after a new allegation of child abuse surfaced.

The NFL domestic violence cases are prompting football fans to skip football even after the league enacted tougher punishments for domestic violence. On Sunday, Twitter exploded with for Commissioner Roger Goodell's removal. The Twitter hashtag #BoycottNFL has been trending.

At the end of Sunday's telecast of SportsCenter, Hannah Storm talked about the Ray Rice surveillance footage, after being asked "impossible" questions from her three daughters. Questions like "Mom, why did he do that? Why isn't he in jail? Why didn't he get fired?"

Storm told the ESPN views "At breakfast this week, instead of discussing how her team was doing, we watched the Ray Rice video play out again in all of its ugliness. I spent this week answering seemingly impossible questions about the league's biggest stars. 'Mom, why did he do that? Why isn't he in jail? Why didn't he get fired?' And yesterday, 'Why don't they even have control of their own players?'

"So here's a question," Storm continued. "What does all of this mean for the future? What does it mean for female fans, whose dollars are so coveted by the NFL, who make up an estimated 45 percent of the NFL's fan base? Are fans and are families, are we as parents supposed to compartmentalize everything that's happening? Are we supposed to simply separate a violent game on the field from violent acts off the field? And if we do, what message does that send?"

"In the NFL, apparently seeing is believing," Storm added. "If the NFL and the Ravens had to see that video to be moved to significant action, then shouldn't those who support the league demand the same? To see action? To see change before believing, as we all wait on the answer to the central question: what exactly does the NFL stand for?"

In closing, Storm asked "Will the NFL, in all its power, take the lead on the issue of domestic violence?"
