Jersey Number 27 NFL: Thousands Of Fans Line Up In Baltimore To Trade Ray Rice Jerseys

The Baltimore Ravens organized an event at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore for fans to have their jersey number 27 NFL exchanged. The event started on September 19 and ended on September 20, 2014, Saturday.

In a report by ESPN, thousands of people waited more than two hours to return their Ray Rice jerseys and get those of Torrey Smith, Joe Flacco and Terrell Snuggs instead for free. The line for the exchange of jerseys was very long, spanning two football fields. According to sources, the first individual who lined up arrived at 4 a.m. on Friday. Many fans, however, said that those who did not want to keep the Rice jersey found the wait worthwhile.

Although some people returned the jersey because Ray Rice was no longer playing for the Ravens, others indicated that they wanted to exchange to show their disdain for domestic violence. Some regarded their return of the uniform as symbolic. Others did not want to return it but felt that it was the right thing to do.

According to USA Today, over 7,000 football fans lined up to have their jersey number 27 NFL exchanged. The Ravens were able to give out 5,595 new jerseys but ran out before noon on September 20. Fans who did not get a new uniform received vouchers instead. Over 2,400 vouchers were given away to fans. They only need to present these to claim their new jerseys as soon as new shipments come in October 2014.

As for the Ravens, the team allegedly spent "six figures" to trade in all the Rice jerseys. Kevin Byrne, spokesman for the Baltimore Ravens, said, "We anticipated over the two days getting about 5,000 people, so we got about 2,000 more. We just felt it was the right thing to do, and that's why we did it."

Overall, the jersey number 27 NFL exchange event was successful and both the fans and officials were satisfied with the results.
