A new social networking site called Ello have been attracting a lot of users to go on board and leave Facebook.

Launched in July with little to no fanfare, Ello is an advert-free social networking platform which aims to draw in users with its "You are not a product" manifesto.

The website's manifesto continues, "Your social network is owned by advertisers. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that's bought and sold."

In what appears to be a jab at Facebook's data-mining and advertising schemes, the website's manifesto adds: "We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment not a tool to deceive, coerce, and manipulate - but a place to connect, create, and celebrate life."

Activity and account creation on the site was reportedly small when it started, but a report from The Daily Dot says a lot of people have been jumping on the new social network because of Facebook's "real name" policy.

"Yes, we've been hearing about the Facebook drama too over the last few days," said the website's founder Paul Budnitz. "Ello welcomes the LGBTQ community and we're very excited to see so many people moving over!"

While the site still runs on beta mode and people need to request an invitation before they can sign up, Budnitz claims that it reportedly now has 4,000 signups per hour.

Once users successfully sign up, they can reportedly start creating their profiles, which the Telegraph suggests is a combination of the best features of Facebook and Twitter. The website reportedly allows users to put a cover photo on their profile and post content like they would on Facebook. The interactions, however, are akin to Twitter, which uses the @format.

Meanwhile an article from the Huffington Post suggests that users should not jump quickly on the Ello bandwagon, as there are many things the site does not address. One of the most important reasons why the report claims the website will not work is the issue of privacy.
