‘Spider Man’ And ‘Avengers’ Team Up Not Happening? Sony Denies Rumors! Film Outfit Not Interested In Sharing Wall Crawler!

Don't hold your breath with the breath-taking news-the Spider Man crossover with the Avengers is not happening yet. Sony is not willing to share the wall-crawler and Marvel's not desperate. Why should you be when you're at the top of your game?

The main suspicion is that the move will be initiated by Sony. Sony backed down from the May 2018 release date they initially reserved and Marvel became the beneficiary-probably "Avengers 3" no less. There are also rumors that the Spider Man franchise is facing various problems and facing the possibility of another reboot.

Sony has all the reasons but according to Entertainment Weekly, they are not interested/motivated to move:

"Sony isn't interested in sharing its Spider-Man toy. Sony's license has a ticking clock. Every three years, the company has to make a film utilizing the character; otherwise, the rights revert back to Marvel, which is now not only a comic book company but also full-fledged movie production house (owned by Sony's rival studio, The Walt Disney Co.). Sony has struggled to keep the franchise profitable after rebooting it with Marc Webb as director and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, they resent the idea that now is the time to throw in the towel."

The last Spider Man movie was this summer's "The Amazing Spider Man 2" and the next movie is "Sinister Six" which will be shown on November 2016. Even if TASM 3 is moved all the way to 2018, Sony evades the three-year rule.

On the other hand, Marvel would welcome the idea, but they are not in a position of need.

"Marvel wants Spider-Man, but doesn't need Spider-Man. This is why no one should expect any deal-making to happen soon. Sony wants to keep its character, and Marvel has plenty of other characters to occupy its schedule."

Marvel is rumored to have movies planned until 2029 and there's no Spider Man in that blueprint. They just had an excellent sequel to a supposedly 'weak' franchise (Captain America) and succeeded mightily in the biggest gamble of their history (Guardians of the Galaxy).

For Sony to claim success, they need to succeed in their biggest gamble. Sinister Six is a super villain team-up, the first among superhero movies.

It won't happen yet and the fans will miss out, but Sony stands to lose the most if they fail.
