K-Pop Mixtape: The Best Of Korean R&B

There are many leaders within the genres of Korean music. Idols tend to dominate the K-pop scene; Illionaire, Amoeba Culture, and AOMG house some of the major names in Korean Hip-Hip; while Davichi, Baek Ji Young, LYN and many others dominate the ballad area. But who is it that reigns in the R&B field? Let’s take a look!

Zion.T's has risen over the past years garnering attention over his voice that is easily identifiable compared to most R&B singers. His singing style showcases passionate reverberations in the tone of both his voice and music.

Zion.T also know by his nickname 'Skinny Red' made his debut back in 2011 with his hit track "Click Me". The song featured Illionaire Records rapper Dok2 as he then went on to release more tracks collaborating with various rappers.

His most recent release "YanghwaBRDG" is an emotional track about his family and the special connection to the location of Yanghwa Bridge. Zion.T has also been featured on Gaeko's latest track "Rose" alongside JYP's HA:TFELT.

Another R&B musician who has a voice that drips with passion and emotion is Amoeba Culture's own solo artist, CRUSH. Having debuted back in April 2014, CRUSH is still new to the industry; however, by the sheer emotion in his voice, one can easily tell he holds a vast amount of talent ready to be unleashed.

CRUSH participated in the drama soundtrack for 2014's hit drama "It's Okay, That's Love" with the track "Sleepless Night" alongside Punch. Recently it has been announced that CRUSH will have comeback and it will be something to look forward too this Fall.

Debuting as a solo artist back in 2010, Bumkey has put a steady series of R&B toned tracks laced with a dash of Hip-Hop and Soul elements.

Though Bumkey made his official solo debut in 2010, Bumkey had been previously recording with big name artists since 2005 including Dynamic Duo, Supreme Team, and Epik High. Earlier this year, Bumkey collaborated with Ga In of Brown Eyed Girls for the sultry track, “Fxxk U”.

Today, Bumkey has made a name for himself and having artists feature on his own albums.

Fly to the Sky made their debut in the late nineties as one of the first established R&B artists. Composed of Brian Joo and Hwanhee, the duo was first formed under SM Entertainment and continued on until 2009 until they took a brief hiatus and returned earlier this 2014.

In 2003 and 2006, Fly to the Sky further solidified their mark in the R&B music industry by winning the Best R&B Performance award. In 2014 after a long hiatus and series of solo activities, Fly to the Sky returned with their emotional track, "You You You".

Considered as South Korea's first established R&B duo, both Brian and Hwanhee have made leaps and bounds in the R&B music industry.

It is unfortunate that there aren't many mainstream R&B artists out right now, but maybe we'll see an increase in the future. But for now, who is your favorite R&B artist?
