Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead Headed to Museum for `Art in Pop’ Exhibition

Grateful Dead guitarist and music Legend Jerry Garcia will have his artwork on display at the Centre National d'art Contemporain Le Magasin in Grenoble, France. The GarciaWeirGallery.com announced that this will be the first time that the artwork of Jerry Garcia will be seen in a museum setting.

Keelin Garcia, Jerry's daughter, and Manasha Garcia, Jerrys wife, donated several pieces of the late guitarist's artwork to the Centre National d'art Contemporain Le Magasin.

"My family is honored and very grateful to Le Magasin for this first opportunity for my father's works to be shown publicly in a museum setting," said Keelin.

"My husband, Jerry, spent many days at home creating his wonderful artwork," said Manasha. "It was always a joy to see how much he loved painting and drawing. We are so very pleased that his art will now be seen in Le Magasin. His work truly stands on its own merit."

The pieces will be displayed in the "Art in Pop" exhibition. The exhibit opened on October 10. It runs through January 4, 2015. The Garcia Weir Gallery began as the online home of the Weir Gallery of Berkeley, California.

Garcia once surmised, "A line on paper is like a note in the air; it's out there and you can't take it back." He worked without a plan, using quality watercolors and Prismacolor pencils, which has enabled his work to be almost fully archivable.

"Art in Pop" showcases Garcia's work alongside other musician artists who have practiced art throughout the years, intermingling the worlds of art and music. The exhibition displays the art in a succession of rooms dedicated to the individuals and/or themes presented.

Although the world has been blessed to have experienced Garcia's musical talents in his long-tenured 30-year run with the Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia, the man, was much more than his Grateful Dead persona shared. As a youth, he attended art classes at the San Francisco Art Institute and over his lifetime, produced over 2,000 original pieces of artwork.

The Garcia Weir Art Gallery was established in 1987 by artist/author Roberta Weir, who was instrumental in assisting Jerry Garcia with his visual artwork. The Gallery showcases her own work as well as the art of Jerry Garcia, Mickey Hart, Manasha Garcia and Keelin Garcia.
