Popeye movie release date has been rumored to be out sometime in 2016 as folks from Sony Pictures Animation, particularly Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the Adam Sandler animated film Hotel Transylvania, is set to direct the upcoming Popeye movie. He is also known to have worked with cartoon classics such as Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and many more.

Tartakovsky, who claimed to grow up watching Popeye and even be a student of a Popeye animator from the 40's, has his dreams come true with the announcement of the revival of the Spinach Eating Sailor-Superhero.

A test footage of the upcoming animated film was revealed by Sony having fans go wild out of excitement of the movie and the cartoon series.

The director, however, left a disclaimer before showing the clip that the video will not be part of the film or can be considered a trailer for the actual film as it is just a test footage to see how the 30's to 40's original cartoon would look like in recent time.

He said as reported by Sony: "This is not a clip, it's not a trailer, it's nothing from the actual movie, the voices are all temp - it's just something that kind of represents what we want to do"

He also revealed that doing hilarious animated films involves a lot of movement, which usually makes it funny, and said "how fun could it be and a perfect fit to do these exaggerated movements with Popeye."
