Taylor Swift Becomes New Face Of New York City Tourism In New Set Of Promotional Videos

Taylor Swift has officially been deemed Miss New York. (Sort of)

The city's official marketing and tourism organization, NYC & Company, announced on Monday, Oct. 27, that Swift has been named the new face of New York City tourism. The move was done in an effort to attract more tourists to the city and coincided with the release of Swift's new album "1989."

In celebration of the title, the organization released several promotional videos featuring Taylor giving her take on the Big Apple.

In one video, Swift explains how to pronounce words that are regular terms in the average New Yorker's vocabulary, including "bodega," "stoop," and "Houston St.," not to be confused with the pronunciation of Houston, TX.

Swift also dishes on the "coziness" of New York in another promotional clip, revealing that she has been met with quite a few friendly people in the city, even when asking for directions.

"New York kind of pulled me here like a magnet," said Swift in another video. "I was intimidated by the fact that it was bright and bold and loud. And now I know that I should run towards things like that."

Swift's song "Welcome to New York," the first on the "1989" track list, is being deemed by many as a new anthem for the city.

Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYU & Company, wholeheartedly agrees.

"New York City is a truly welcoming city, and 'Welcome To New York' perfectly exemplifies the unrivaled hospitality, energy and excitement that can be felt throughout all five boroughs," said Dixon in a statement on the organization's website

The appointment of Swift to the position has drawn some criticism, however. Many claim that Swift is an inappropriate person to fill the role, considering the Pennsylvania-native moved to New York City earlier this year and splits her time between NYC, Beverly Hills, and Nashville.

"I'm incensed! It's insulting," Queens-born Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider told the Daily News. "She doesn't have any life experience here, or connection to the town.

"There's so many others - Jerry Seinfeld, for instance, if you want a big name," Snider continued. "But Taylor Swift is the pop culture queen, so she moves into town, and she's the ambassador."

NY1 anchorman Pat Kiernan also criticized the decision, claiming that Swift, who lives in a near $20 million Tribeca apartment and travels around the city in private cars, gives her a vastly different perspective on the city than the average New Yorker.

"Does she know how much to add to a MetroCard to end up without a few cents trapped on it?" asked Kiernan. "Does she know which hot dog vendor sells the 'Recession Special?' Does she know that 44th Ave., 44th Rd. and 44th Dr. are all parallel streets in Queens? Does she know who Dr. Zizmor is?"

"Real Housewife of NYC" star Jill Zarin defended Swift, however.

"New York City is the melting pot, and everyone comes from somewhere," said the former reality show star. "She represents youth, talent, creativeness, and she is definitely a role model."

Many others have questioned why NYC & Company didn't appoint a star like Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, whose song "Empire State of Mind" has become the modern theme song for the city.

Nevertheless, it appears Swift will be ushering in a new wave of tourists to NYC for some time to come.
